It may not be at its finest, but there are plenty of ground-breaking modern bands who are just as good as anything from 30 years ago. Examples:

Nine Inch Nails

Deftones
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Opeth
Rage Against The Machine
Killswitch Engage
Avenged Sevenfold
Radiohead
A Perfect Circle (who could yet go on to be one of the greatest bands in history)

whoever says rock is dead, doesnt listen to enough music. Rock along with all other genre's of music have just become commercialized. there is plenty of rooted rock bands out there. Of course all this mainstream coorperate rock is garbage and not to mention insulting, but that is just how the music industry works today.
