Firstly, Tarkin was too overconfident and it cost him his life. Thrawn wasnt, he didnt like wasting troops and never was overconfident. He acts calm and is the only alien grand admiral or high ranked imperial in the glory days of the empire.
Veers? Without Thrawn, Veers would never have been a general. Read Tales From the Empire and you'll see how good thrawn was at fooling hal and corran horn and making them believe he was Jodo Kast and see him help put down Zekka Thyne (the black sun crimelord). You'll also see him put a recommandation to Vader and thus making Veers a general.

But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya punk?
Rukh Clan Baik'var turned against Thrawn because of the truths that Leia showed the Combined Clan Leaders. The Empire wasn't helping them, they were keeping them in slavery.
^Disregard the combined clan leaders.. I was thinking bothan =o
Thrawn didnt see the danger coming, there was no clue whatsoever.
Tarkin saw the thirty rebel fighters attacking his death star. Chief Bast also warned him: "I've analysed their attack sir and there is a danger, shall I have your ship standing by?"
"Evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances"
But it was instead him who underestimated their chances, not very wise for a grand moff in charge of a super-weapon.
Thrawn never underestimated.

yerss has a good point, I don't think we've been introduced to a single imperial who didn't have some degree of overconfidence (forgive me if I'm wrong, I just recently discovered the EU) And it was already mentioned in another thread that overconfidence is sort of a running theme in SW
I love the scene in "Heir to the Empire" towards the beginning where Pellaeon walks into Thrawn's command room place and Thrawn starts talking to him about art!! Omg I can just picture what the look on an imperial captain's face would be upon finding out that his commander was into art!! I almost cracked up reading that!!
Speaking of Thrawn, who thinks this guy looks a lot like him? His name is Gavin Newsom, and he just won for mayor in San Francisco. I knew he looked like a villain I'd seen before, but I didn't connect it to Thrawn until I saw this thread.

if anyones a cool imperial its palleon for being smart enough to combine forces with the Republic and making one government finally, and breaking the cycle of overconfident blow hards who think they're cool 5 mins. before they die. But I like Piett too. He was one of the few officers to not piss off Vader.
