USH'S STAR WARS GAME- Padawan Selection
Players from the Jedi Knight or Master catogories may be asked, over time, to train a Padawan. This is always entirely voluntary, and there is no penalty for refusal.
Training a Padawan brings rewards and problems on two levels. First, the practical- you have to look after your Padawan, and exercise extra responsbility in guiding your Padawan's learning. On the other hand, your Padawan will be around to help you throughout your adventures.
Secondly, the gameplay element- training a Padawan is an extra level of complication for a player, and things can go wrong which may make life difficult. On the other hand, you may enjoy the challenge and like the idea of watching someone grow up in skills and power in response to the way you train them!
So, accepting a Padawan is a serious responsibility but the rewards can be great.
When you chose a Padawan, he starts play at age 13 (having been with you for a year), with a basic set of skills and likewise a defined personality. All the Padawans have their quirks, problems, and talents. Certainly at this early age, you will have to look after them a great deal.
However, your Padawans will grow up quickly between episodes. At the start of each episode, you will receive a progress report on your Padawan, and a new character sheet will be made for him/her to show his/her new skill and stat levels.
Here is the hook. The WAY the Padawans change and grow will be entirely down to you- but not directly! The things you tell your Padawan to do, the ways you act around him, the ways you teach him- even the events that happen around you and because of you in the game, all will shape your Padawan's growth- both in skills, powers, tricks- and personality.
Trouble is, they will pick up BAD things as well as good...
Yup, there is lots than can go wrong with a Padawan! The biggest pit trap is the Dark Side- ALL Padawans are at a dangerous point in their training, when the Dark Side will test them. This danger is very real and do not ignore it. Still, this is the catastrophic end of things and sensible play should keep things under control.
However, Padawans can easily grow sullen, undisicplined, argumentative, depressed, angry, even violent- they are teenagers after all! Less obviously, they may become distracted, or focussed on un-Jedilike things... or they might simply not like you as a trainer!
Padawans normally become imbalanced also, and will develop into unbalanced Knights. You can try and even their studies out but frankly, most of the starting player templates are unbalanced also, so it may be as well to accept that Padawans will want to specialise!
In the end, though, the Padawan will end up reflecting you in some way... so be careful how you do things!

Sunda Zannashar (Stage One- Aged 13)
Master: Roan
Born on the harsh mountainous world of Zurtan, Sunda comes from hardy stock; his people are tall and muscular. Sunda is certainly no exception- and the hardness is in mind as well as body; the Zurtans are not a people who go easy on themselves. Sunda treated his learning process as a Youngling as a trial, an obstacle to be overcome, a feat of mental and physical discipline. Whilst this very prosaic view of the universe served him well in his lessons- he is certainly not without talent- it hampered his understanding of the Force, the sublime nature of which he cannot quite grasp. Sunda is quick and his fighting instinct is remarkable, but his training is far from complete.
Since being placed with Roan, he has observed happily Roan's direct line of approach to troubles; Sunda can understand this reasoning well. Sunda has now killed his first man (in the course of his duty), and is satisifed that he has mentally borne up to this challenge also. He will be watching his Master carefully to see how he handles obstacles on this mission...

Jeb Seurro (Stage One- aged 13)
Master: Gundark
Jeb would have been a bully. There is no cultural reason behind his superb fitness; it is a combination of good genes, mental attitude and personal effort. But as a Youngling his trainers recognised a dangerous aggressive streak that meant that Jeb would not have been a nice person if not a Jedi; the trainers were able to ensure these traits never surfaced- a superb justification of only taking new Jedi when they are young enough for this sort of problem to be dealt with. Despite having it explained to him, Jeb has never understood this apparent problem he once had. Feeling foolish for not being able to see it, Jeb has tried to compensate by impressing his trainers in other areas, and he is certainly showing the fruits of that effort. Jeb topped his class for physical fitness, is progressing well enough with the Force, but perhaps doesn't observe as much about the world as some other students.
Brash and confident, Jeb thinks being assigned to a veteran Master like Gundark is the greatest thing, like, ever!, and he wants to prove to her his worth just as he tried to prove to his trainers. Gundark's mix of wisdom, protocol, and her underlying supreme dedication and determination to see things through has not gone unnoticed by Jeb.

Vilpa Adar (Stage One- aged 13)
Master: Marcus
Vilpa was an abandoned child when found, a vibe that carried on throughout his development. He was very lonely as a Youngling, finding it hard to make relationships, and this again was another trait that the trainers worked hard to eliminate. The emotional instability of this could have totally derailed his training, but in the end, Vilpa came through. And it is well that he did, because Vilpa is serious, disciplined, intelligent, and dedicated, and the Jedi need more like him. Vilpa was never the most outgoing of students but he studied hard and performed well; sabre fighting did not come naturally to him but he practiced hard until he got it right. The Force came more naturally to him; he seemed to understand it instinctively.
Master Marcus is in contrast to Vilpa's personality and the Council may have been well satisifed with this arrangement, allowing Vilpa to pick up some more outgoing traits. Vilpa has been taking in Marcus' views on the establishment they have to work with, though Marcus has also kept Vilpa on a tight leash so far.

Well, if Xeth ever gets to take one, he is torn between Leoto Okama and Essilin Beche. D'an has a weak fitness, which does not suit Xeth's style. He would have liked to train Jeb.
