I was pretty having the same worries as you have before I played the game. But believe me, it's a good system and you do practically know where you should be in your levels based on what levels your enemies are. As you progress in the game to new areas, the monsters levels go up as well, so when you find it's becoming more difficult to defeat the monsters, you know you need to level up. The monsters level up with you as you progress.
That's what just happened to me. I was doing good and then I get to this area where the monsters are getting too dificult for me and so now I see I need to level up.
And what IR says is correct - you can judge how much you need to level by how strong the enemies in a particular area are. I managed to skate through a boss battle when I was much lower in levels than I should have been, then kept nearly getting wiped out by the enemies in the next area. Had to be careful in levelling there for a bit.
Just at save points, though I have so far come across one point where it did prompt me to save before going on.
Also, when you go into areas that are supposed to be particularly hard, it'll reccomend to save your game onto a new file just in case you get stuck. I have two save files I switch between because of this.
I'm about done with the game, just need to beat the boss and do some more of the sidequests. Have you guys been buying the Grimoirs from the Bazzar? If not, you should asap, they really increase the money you bring in.

Yes, I've bought all the ones that have been available thus far. That's exactly what I was telling them.
You might think that's an awful lot of money to spend and you could spend it on weapons and armor and items and stuff, but when you see how much more money they actually cause you to have, you won't doubt your purchase for a second.
Yeah, I wish I had bought them earlier, i just bought them all now towards the end of the game and it's crazy how much money comes in, especially once you get a good battle chain.
the grimores help you a lot, especially early in the game. it is a very good investment, cuz you are getting your gil's worth. and try to do chains constantly. there are areas where you can easily get to over a 50 chains (lussu mines, ogir yensa, etc). aside form getting rare items, or loot, you can get 3 times, 4 times as much from one enemy then you would if just kill it cuz in was in your way.
i've got 5 grimores, you get them just by talkin many times to any shop owner, or by looking at the hunt board (i think you get one when you check the board 15 times)
I don't know when I'm gonna finish this game (I'm gonna try a lil' bit more during the holiday) I barely got time to play. tihs week i only played once. I'm in the nam yensa, just about to enter raithwall's tomb, 54 hours, and cht at 25+. you will think i level up lot, but currently I'm not. all I do now it's completely explore an area as soon as it opens up.
I would say you could level up easily just by exploring the whole new area that's given to you, fight every monster you encounter, avoid monster with 10 levels over you, unless you feel lucky and fight them, in that case, perform mist chains, I've been able to defeat 5 dinosaurs in the eastersand, i fought many werewolfs in giza, and level up a lot fighting in the garamisthe waterway (malboros ). the only things i haven't been able to defeat are the damned elementals.
you won't even feel any lack of license points, and you will through the game almost smoothly.
for those who're just about to play the game, you can make the game much easier for you at the beginning of the game, could be considered cheating, and i think it's recommended to do it on your second run through the game: at the beginning of the game between the eastersand and giza plain, level up Vaan, and Penelo, if you have her, up to level 25, then just continue the game as you normally would, you're bound to keep on leveling, and when you get control of the other characters, they'll be just about the same level as Vaan and with crazy tons of LP.
you'd notice that a monster doesn't give you as much exp points when you're alone, than when you have a party of 4 characters, that's cuz the monster will give the exact amount of exp points, but the game will divide that amount between the numbers of party members currently on screen. that's why what I wrote above will only work early in the game, after that you'll have to level chts individually, and that would take a long time.

Yeah. I really need to start back playing.
Did you find when you got to [SPOILER - highlight to read]: Giruvegan City that you had to do some leveling up before you progressed or did you charge right through with no troubles?
That's what has me on this little hiatus from the game. I'm not looking forward to the leveling up.

well just to let you know the japanese famitsu magazine declared ffxii the best of the series and alot of people on ign agreed it over took ff7.
Famitsu gave ffxii perfect score of 40/40..
But what i do not like is the battle system, no romance and they do not focus on vaan much, mostly on ashe and the resistance
And not to forget that i really do not like the sceneries that much, too desert like and personally i say that ffx has the greatest and best areas in the series. Though im abit bias to ffx but ffx and ffxii are among my favourite. FFXI has alot of flaws and is the most underrated ff i have seen so far,
Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII both look promising, the fighting is like what you saw in advent children
