“…and the other events not mentioned by Thucydides-comma-or anyone else in Lactor for that matter include…”
The history teacher droned on again, Leo was quickly falling asleep. He couldn’t remember why he had chosen to do Ancient History in the first place. His hand wrote as the teacher dictated, yet the words just went straight past him. His eyes began to drift slowly, but he couldn’t show that he was asleep. As he wrote he looked across the room at the clock, 12:08, he had only been in the room for twelve minutes. That meant there was another fifty-eight minutes of this left. It was only half-way through the year, leaving another three months of an hour and ten minutes worth of dictation, a couple of months of revision and then the exam, which he knew he would fail.
Leo looked down at his work, the words becoming squiggly lines that made no sense. He sighed and began to daydream.
“Leo Thorpe! Are you listening to what I am saying!?” the teacher yelled, snapping Leo out of his daydream.
Looking around Leo saw everyone was looking at him. He looked at the clock, 12:14, he had been daydreaming for almost six minutes.
“Yes sir. Sort of. I…ummm…don’t feel to well, it’s effecting my concentration…can I please go and get a drink of water?”
“Very well, but hurry up. This is important stuff.” the teacher said to Leo.
Leo walked quickly out of the room and down the corridor. He was feeling fine, but just needed some air. He walked to the toilet and ran the tap. He bent down and used his hand as a cup to drink the water. He turned the tap off and stood up looking in the mirror. He saw a tall young man, with short blonde hair and blue eyes staring back at him. He sighed as did the man, his reflection. He turned around and walked to the door, down the corridor and to his classroom door, room 708. Taking a deep breath he opened the door and stepped in. He sat up straight and stared at the clock while writing the teachers dictation for the rest of the lesson.
“Man, you completely zoned out back there Leo” Leos friend Adam was telling him, or rather lecturing him.
Leo just stood listening, he wanted to go home. It was five past one and the lesson was over, as it was a Wednesday it was Leo’s half day. Adam looked at his watch.
“Crap! My bus will be here soon! I’ll see you tomorrow, OK Leo?” Adam said turning and heading for the doors.
Adams bus was only once every hour so he couldn’t miss it.
“Yeah, See ya.” Leo said heading in the opposite direction, he lived a lot closer to the school, and he knew a few short cuts to get there.
Leo walked down the main street of Blackpool. He passed McDonalds, where many of his friends worked, and Game, where he hoped to work someday. He really wanted to work somewhere adventurous, like for MI6 or something like that, but he knew that would never happen. He turned a corner and headed down a back alley. After walking forwards a bit he saw something strange, something that would change his life forever.

What Leo saw fascinated him, it seemed to draw his eyes in and not let them wander. There was a space about ten metres in front of him, two metres wide. The buildings and objects behind it were distorted, bend forwards and backwards in a sort of curve shape. From the centre of the distortion, which seemed to be shaped like a circle, came blue and purple lights, long and thin, rounded at the end. They shot to the edge of the distortion and disappeared, with more replacing them from the centre. Leo tilted his head slightly to the left, trying to make sense of what this was, when something emerged from it. The figure that came out landed on one knee, with the other stuck up supporting its shoulder. Its head faced down, with long black hair drooping down over its face. The figure slowly stood up, revealing the form of a man. His eyes seemed empty and dead-like, they were an icy blue colour. The clothing that he wore seemed peculiar to Leo, they were a silver colour, with black trousers and black sleeves. They looked like they had come straight out of a science fiction film. The mans eyes fixed on Leo.
“You will come with me,” He said in an accent that Leo didn’t quite recognise, “Now!”
Leo took a step backwards, this was too much for him to handle, he turned and ran. Before Leo could get two metres from where he was the man had grabbed him by the back of the collar and was dragging him backwards towards the portal. The mans strength seemed super-human. Leo thrashed about with elbow blows, kicks to the mans knee and punches aimed at the head, of those that hit the man didn’t flinch at all. Before long they were both at the portal. The man threw Leo in, looked behind him in-case anyone had seen and jumped in too.
The blue and purple lights flew past him, in the distance was a white light which slowly became a room. In the room were three men and a lot of machinery all staring into the portal. Leo flew out of the portal and rolled across the floor, into the door.
The man came through some five seconds later. He stared at Leo, his eyes paralysing him for a couple of seconds.
“Here is the specimen of Dimension 278” The man said.
Leo quickly looked around the room at all the machinery, none of which he had ever seen the likes of before. All three men were dressed the same, black and silver.
“Good,” another of the men said, his accent the same as the one that had captured Leo, “Guards!”
Two men entered the room, these two wore complete black, and little hats that looked like officers hats worn in the second world war.
“Take this…boy…to the interrogation room” The man who had called the guards said.
Leo hated being called a boy or a kid, or anything like that. The guards grabbed him by the arms and dragged him out of the door and down a corridor. Towards a room that had a white door, with a frosted window that had ‘Interrogation Room 1’ written on it in black. There was no way that this could be a good sign.

The questions that the men asked Leo were odd, they weren’t anything like he expected. But then again how can a civilian expect anything that is going to be asked of them by kidnappers, especially ones from another dimension? The questions were things like; was there a second world war?; who won it?; what was the planet (they never said Earth) like?, and other bizarre questions. It wasn’t long before Leo cottoned on to the reasons behind these questions, they were trying to ascertain as much information as possible about Leos world. The questioning continued for about half an hour.
After the questioning was over the interrogator and the man who had dragged Leo through the portal stepped over to the side. Leo didn’t catch much of their talk other than “What now?…kill…call…Klein…” at that the man who had dragged Leo through the portal left the room. Leo slipped his foot underneath the table, into a position that he knew would allow him to flip it. He managed to get a glimpse out of the door. He saw a long white corridor, a door on the right where the portal had been and a window at the far end. Soon the kidnapper re-entered the room along with a short man wearing what appeared to be doctors clothes covered with blood. They both approached the table. The short man, Klein, reached into his pocket and withdrew a knife. Leo watched where they were, he then checked to see that the door was open. His mind was working out a thousand calculations at once, piecing together a plan from bits of films and books. Now was his time to act.
As Klein stepped towards the table Leo sprung into action. He kicked the table with all of his strength, flipping it on top of Klein. The guard who stood to his right reached for a pistol from his hip holster. Leo stood up, sticking his left shoulder into the guards face as he did so. He then grabbed the pistol from his hands and ran over the flipped table and through the door. The kidnapper and the man who had called the guards earlier had been too slow and too surprised to act. Leo was a quarter of the way down the corridor when they had turned and begun to chase after him.
Leo passed the door to the portal room, he looked behind him at his pursuers and shot a couple of rounds from the gun. His father had taught him how to shoot three months earlier, he was in the army and trained Leo so he wouldn’t be picked on. Leo continued to run, his shots had slowed the two men down but they were now back up to speed. Leo thought quickly, about his original plan of simply jumping through the window. It wouldn’t work without him getting seriously hurt…and what if it was shatterproof glass. He quickly raised the pistol and shot another couple of rounds at the window. He ran towards it faster now and jumped. The glass shattered and he was through. He fell to the floor, about five metres down. His arm dislocated on the floor and he looked up at the world around him. He knew one thing…he was far from home indeed.

The world that he was now staring at looks almost like the ‘real world’s surface’ in one of his favourite films The Matrix There was not a single tree, flower, bird, animal nor even a single blade of grass around. All that was there was rubble. Hugh lumps of a bluish concrete, rusted pipes, jagged at their edges, grey concrete chunks, shards of glass, electrical wires. Leo could tell what they were from, it was as though a million buildings had just collapsed all at once, except for the one that he had just escaped from. Half expecting the sky to be black and scorched out Leo looked up. The sky was as it had been in his world. Blue, sunny and cloudy. Leo didn’t have a chance to ponder over the strange world for long. Above him he heard “Quick, out the window! Kill him!” Quickly Leo sprung to his feet and ran, not knowing where to go to.
Bullets rained down on him, although none hit him. Leo’s feet stumbled on the terrain as he ran. He fell over a couple of times, ripping his jeans and cutting his hands on broken glass. He didn’t let this stop him though and he kept running. A drop of rain hit the rubble, it was soon followed by more. The guards back in the building kept firing and missing, then reloading and continuing on with the cycle. Leo still ran, his adrenaline keeping him going. Soon he reached a piece of building slopped downwards, as his feet touched it the rainwater that had fallen on it caused him to slip. Leo fell, using his bleeding hands to try and steady himself. The slope was further down than he thought, he hit another block of rubble, this time a vertical piece, part of a partially intact building. A rusty pipe stuck out of it, inches away from his face. Leo used his hands to edge himself sideways and stand up. He knew the guards from the building would be after him soon. He got to his feet and climbed over the small wall.
Inside the small ruined building was a hole, it was in a wall that was surrounded by rubble. A block of rubble had slipped out of place and revealed it. Quickly Leo moved towards it, he got down on his hands and knees and crawled in. Inside was a small alcove, with a crack in it that headed downwards towards something that Leo couldn’t quite make out. Moving as fast as he could Leo put the rubble that had fallen in front of the space where he had crawled in. He hoped it would be enough to hide it from those after him. Without taking a chance to think, he moved down the crack in the wall opposite where he had come in. His back moved along one wall and his hands felt along the other. It wasn’t long until he came to another small alcove. In this one there was a large steel door.
Leo moved closer to the door and inspected it. There was no door handle or anything else that could be used to open the door from this side. He raised his hand to knock, but hesitated. What if the people inside were more of ‘them’ they would surely kill him. After thinking it over he knocked on the door. What had he got to loose? A small window appeared at the top of the door and some eyes looked through. They eyed him up and down a couple of times and disappeared. The door then opened and Leo was pulled inside. The doorman closed the door and put a bar down to lock the door, while another man pointed a gun between Leos eyes.
