David Rice Atchison (August 11, 1807 – January 26, 1886) was a mid-19th century Democratic United States Senator from Missouri. He served as President pro tempore of the United States Senate for six years. Atchison served as a major general in the Missouri State Militia in 1838 during Missouri's Mormon War and as a Confederate brigadier general during the American Civil War under Major General Sterling Price in the Missouri Home Guard. He is best known for the questionable claim that for one day (March 4, 1849) he may have been Acting President of the United States. This belief, however, is dismissed by nearly all historians, scholars, and biographers.

Some mammals have hooves or claws; we have toenails. It's believed that way back when our feet were used for more than just mobility-related activities, our toenails would help us pick things up (the way our fingernails still do today).

Scientists have found that the sparse bristles of hair covering the skin of the largest living animals to walk on land can dissipate heat. Unlike most mammals, where dense body hair insulates against the cold, elephant hairs can increase heat loss by up to 20 per cent.

A bunion (also referred to as hallux valgus) is often described as a bump on the side of the big toe. But a bunion is more than that. The visible bump actually reflects changes in the bony framework of the front part of the foot.

How many times have you circled the block to find a parking spot, and just when you think you have one, it turns out to be a hydrant? Well, if you notice the reflectors on the road, you'll see they change to blue to let you know where hydrants are. This is more useful for firefighters, but it's also a fact that regular motorists can benefit from.

A myth about wood baseball bats is that they are much more dangerous than aluminum bats because they can break.
This isn't true. More players are injured each year due the velocity of a ball off of an aluminum bat, than injuries due to a broken wood bat.
