Bees really do travel in a straight line to food sites, and the phrase simply reflects this fact. "As the crow flies" is the same sort of thing. Whilst "making a beeline" has the primary meaning of going directly to somewhere (no stops or deviations) and a secondary sense of hurrying is often implied.
Halloween is more Irish than St. Patrick's Day. Halloween's origins come from a Celtic festival for the dead called “Samhain.” Celts believed the ghosts of the dead roamed Earth on this holiday, so people would dress in costumes and leave “treats” out on their front doors to appease the roaming spirits.
Samhain is also the (very fitting) name of the band that Glenn Danzig formed between leaving the Misfits and forming his own eponymous solo act, 'Danzig'.
The air we breathe has all kinds of stuff in it – from oxygen and nitrogen to dust, pollution, allergens, smoke, bacteria, viruses, small bugs and countless other things. The nose helps clean that air. On the surface of the nasal tissues, particularly the turbinates, are cells with small hair-like appendages called cilia that trap much of the bad stuff. Once captured, the bad stuff sits in the mucous and gradually is pushed into the throat, where it’s swallowed. Our stomachs tolerate bad stuff much better than our lungs.
A mystery island that has been branded 'dangerous' has suddenly formed in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle.
The crescent-shaped mile-long island off the tip of Cape Point in Buxton, North Carolina, began rising from the sea in Spring.
Surrounding the waters of the so-called Devil's Triangle, the sandbank has been dubbed Shelly Island by locals because of the vast quantities of shells which litter the shore.
The new island measures around one-mile long and more than 400 feet wide.
Squidward Q. Tentacles has been referred to as both a squid and an octopus throughout the Spongebob Squarepants series run, but he only has six tentacles. The animators decided to not give the pessimistic cephalopod the proper number because any more than six legs would "weigh him down too much visually."
Have you ever wondered why Mickey Mouse or Goofy wear white gloves? The reason is also simple and goes back to Mickey Mouse and the beginning of the cartoon animation, when cartoons were black and white. Mickey was first given white gloves as a way of contrasting his naturally black hands against his black body. Hands with white gloves were more visible. Felix the Cat is notable for not wearing white gloves and demonstrates why this is a problem. Also Mickey Mouse was not wearing gloves in the first cartoon Steamboat Willie.
Many people do not realize how old the game of checkers really is.
Scholars believe that the game may have developed from a similar type of game that was played as early as 1400 B.C. The ancient game was called Quirkat or Alquerque and was played in Rome, Egypt, India, and Greece. It used 2 sets of flat round pieces that were different colors. The board for the game was 5 by 5 and there were 10 pieces on each side and the object of the game was to capture the opposing pieces.
The term "original" was first used by Crips in 1972. It meant "we're the first" and was used by all Crips regardless of age. In 1974 the word "gangster" was added. It derived from the Original Gangster Crips (now known as Eight Tray Gangster Crips). Initially, Crips only used the term "O.G." when writing their name or neighborhood; it was not customarily used in everyday speech.

The hard hat was invented by Edward W. Bullard in 1919 to protect miners from head injuries. The original hard hat was made out of steamed layers of glued canvas painted black.
The first project in which hard hats were widely used, was the construction of the Hoover Dam.
The first project in which hard hats were required on site, was the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
While no particular colour of hard hat is recognized internationally, it’s widely accepted that certain colours are assigned to certain types of employees: yellow for labourers, blue for electrical workers, white for supervisors.
