[SPOILER - highlight to read]: The Mouth of Sauron will appear before them with the army of Orcs when the Black Gate was opened. He will then say such devastating things to Aragorn and co., saying that Frodo and Sam failed in their quest and they're dead already. As an evidence, he showed them the Mithril shirt, and also maybe their other paraphernalias. Then the rumor says that Aragorn will kill The Mouth of Sauron that's why he's not there in the TC. That scene will also explain the "For Frodo" line, with misty-eyes and all. They thought they were hopeless and the Ring is on Its way to Sauron already. Aragorn just dedicated that final stand for Frodo.
The sudden disappearance of their horses are also linked to The Mouth of Sauron scene.
