I couldn't find a thread on this movie in the MDF, so here we go. There aren't too many really solid German/Russian films that have made their way to the U.S. since "Run, Lola, Run", but I stumbled upon one a couple of weeks back.
"Good bye, Lenin!" is a winner of multiple International film awards, as well as a Academy Award nominee in 2003 for Best Foreign Language Film. The film is about a young man named Alex, who's mother slips into a coma. His mom, a socialist, under the rule of the capitalist U.S.S.R.
It just so happens the year is 1989, and while Alex's mother was in a coma, the Berlin Wall came down. Alex painstakingly recreates the days leading up to the fall, although they already happened, to more or less save his mothers life, because due to her condition, any sudden surprises are literally fatal
"Lenin" is a really well crafted film, it's funny and lighthearted, and really puts you in the life of East Germans before the fall of the wall. It's a story of true love and deciation. I found it for sale at Hollywood Video yesterday for a mere $5.99! Needless to say, it came home with me.

it's one of my all time favourite movies. i think its superb and very funny. and you dont necessarily have to be german to be able to laugh about the jokes, cos it hasnt that much of insider-jokes in it.
and the lead-actor daniel Brühl is brilliant in it imo.
but it wasnt nominated for an academy award though...unfortunately if you ask me!
i am from germany and i am always very delighted when german movies get such an attention in other countries, and particular this one (which deserves it, cos its good )
there are actually quite a few german movies, that are pretty well done and very good, but dont get much attention in europe and overseas

ähhhh....yes, i did. i thought academy award is the name for oscar, it's not? here in germany they either call them oscar or academy awards ....so academy awards are the golden globes??
then of course you are totally right there it was nominated for a golden globe....sorry!
