I watched this last night for the first time. [SPOILER - highlight to read]: I am ashamed of myself too. Very different movie.
Reminded me of Butterfly Effect.

Donnie Darko is way better than the Butterfly Effect. They were nothing alike.

Erm...I rented it and I thought it was okay, but nothing great. The ending was pretty cool.
Although The Butterfly Effect was a thousand times better.

What i thought after i watched it -
Donnie escapes death, messes with the order of things. He has a chance to put it right. While he's doing this he lives..he falls in love ( that's why subconciously he floods he school - if he doesn't flood the school then he doesn't walk home with Gretchen. It's also why he exposes Patrick Swayze's character - because he does this his mother has to go away, it leaves him and his sister to have a party and he can make love to Gretchen. ) Because of the partyGretchen dies..the guy in the rabbit suit is Frank.
Now Donnie knows that if he doesn't die in the house when the engine falls in - if order isn't restored - then Gretchen will die. I think that's why he laughs to him self in bed at the end...he's lived and fallen in love and he doesn't care what's coming next.
There are people there to help him through his ' journey ' . Noah Whyle, Drew Barrymore and the Old Woman are all there to help make sure Donnie gets through it...they are guardians. They weren't sure why they were there but they realise as soon as Donnie starts asking questions about time travel etc ( hence the conversation in the staffroom )
To fully understand this movie, you need to watch it at least 3 times, read Roberta Sparrow's book, and go to the site.
WARNING, SPOILER!! If you have read this whole thread and hadn't even seen it... wow.
Donnie didn't do anything by subconscious really. Frank told him to do each thing. Flooding the school lead to him walking Gretchen home as well as that PTA meeting. The PTA meeting lead to Drew Barrymore being fired, which was important for Donnie to learn about "Cellar Door". "Cellar Door" helped Donnie know to go into the cellar at Grandma Death's house. That lead to Gretchen's death, then Frank's. Frank's death was important so he could come back and communicate to Donnie. Burning Jim Cunningham's house lead to his kiddie porn to be revealed, which lead to the Mrs. Farmer not going on the trip. With Mrs. Darko going on the trip, she caused a short delay on the flight home so she could call home and check on Donnie. That way, the jet engine could go through the portal and Donnie can go back in time. I'm not sure if Donnie's death helped the fate of the world, but it did help all those who suffered by Donnie living.
The director's cut was okay. I liked being able to read the book during the movie. Not to mention I believe it added a new chapter that the original DVD didn't have. The music change I didn't care for. And I didn't like how they took out Gretchen's quote at the end, "What if you could go back in time and take all those hours of pain and darkness and replace them with something better?" I'll be getting the director's cut DVD but keep my original as well.

Of course it has more scenes, it's basically an extended version of the original, with more special features. I'll Definately be getting the dvd.
And Donnie Darko was much more original and had "a thousand times" better acting.
Butterfly Effect Sucked pretty damn hard. Almost completely ripping off Donnie Darko.
