I really liked Amy in The Eleventh Hour, and then she managed to annoy me more and more and more as the series went by (though she was not at all bad in her finale). I am still worried that the new companion will be very similar in personality.

Oh, Amy was a better companion than Rose by far. Legit character progression...it was fun to see. I was talking solely about the emotion of the sendoff.
I liked Amy up until the flesh-clone episode. She got progressively worse after that. Her only saving grace, for me, was the fact that she cared so deeply about Rory and it made her a little more relatable, imo.
Rose was decent, but immature I thought. I was glad she got a bit of closure at the end of her run, though.
I heard someone say that Matt Smith is stepping down soon too. Weird to think he's made almost as many episodes as Tennant, it doesn't feel that long, guess they had better seasonal arcs with Tennant.
“... on the Fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh, when no creature can speak falsely or fail to answer, a question will be asked — a question that must never be answered."
Well, Moffat is infamous for doublespeak on lines like that, and I don't think the Fields are turning up yet anyway.
There have been rumours about Matt for ages- I'd be healthily sceptical about them. He's doing the Specials, which means he is here for another year at least.

So the new gf was curious about Doctor Who. I started her with Eccleston, and she's enjoying it. We're about 6 episodes in. I'm pleased. I now have an excuse to re-watch them chronologically from the start.
He's certainly mercurial enough. I wouldn't be against that in theory. Good call. I'd have suggested Bill Nighy, but he was in that episode with Van Gogh.
Yeah Tennant and Ecclestone are both rumoured to be returning for short stories about their time as The Doctor, with actors/lookalikes playing the Doctor's from years gone by.
