Well, for a start, you are wrong about the knives for RTD- the episode has gone down DAMN well amongst the fans, some calling it the best episode he's ever written, one or two saying it's the best New Who Episode full stop. There is some sentiment that it has out-Moffated Steven Moffat.
Secondly, We DID know what it wanted- it wanted freedom! It wanted out! It was trapped, now it has rthe chance to get away, that was all very clear. Not knowing exactly what it was, in the context of the story, was very effective.
I am distressed at the idea that it 'screams' no budget; that indicates some kind of obsession with the high budget ideal. It didn;t NEED a budget; it wa sa single shot human drama, which is some of the best stuff out there. You cannot have EVERY episode like that, but you sure as hell need some in a series, and there is no automatic difference in quality.
This episode had fantastic performances- Tennant's best since Human Nature- it had a genuine sense of threat, because for once you actually felt the Doctor couldn't save either the situation or himself, and whether you agree with RTD's assessment of people or not, the commentary is very well made.
Well acted, well-written, and extremely well produced (the effort to make all the audio synch up was immense, and far more impressive than much of the cgi work in other stories), so why in ther hell would anyone want to complain about the fact it was not a high budget episode?
No, this was awesome.

The sound/dialogue must have been one hell of a mess to work with, did very well with that.
Well I enjoyed this episode a lot and had some nice creepy moments, two standout. One when the two pilots and the Doctor were looking out of the window and the younger pilot started to see something in the background. The other where we were waiting for Sky to turn around after been 'infected' by whatever the thing was. Two great moments.
Also a nice break from Tennant's overacting in parts, hardly any in this episode thankfully, nice change and wish he was more like he was in the this episode for the other episodes.
Reminded me of the original Haunting film, with the banging around the door frame scene, now that was scary! this not so, but creepy creepy.
The gay reference was nothing to moan about, she said she was single because the Doctor mentioned travelling alone and the conversation went on, and the partner just happened to be a she.
i liked the episode, it was the doctor in a situation he could not control and was ganged up on by people, regular people, he had no control, he can save the world from Daleks and Cybermen but when it comes to people he has no idea, and i liked how this played through saying things like I'm the clever one, and how everyone started to turn from one to the other, i think it was a great episode and showed real emotion and a sense of fear from the enclosed space, it proves that it does not need a big budget to work, look at TDD and TUATW both of them had a bigger budget and they were not as good as this one.
i did actualy say you can have good low bugdet episodes above on my last post
i want a bit of excitement though and last week showed that two parters are the way forward in 2010
as an ensemble piece Midnight didnt do it for me and i thought of the HAUNTING too
except that truly was creepy and had time to build on the scares
Midnight just came across as a filler episode
im in the minority on here but i didnt like it
and the #42 was a flippant referance of my own but we get the picture by now RTD
I have no idea how anyone could think that was a poor episode, because it was absolutely amazing, I thought. Just because it's not loaded full of action doesn't mean it wasn't any good and personally? I love a good psychological thrill, which is precisely what this delivered.
How could anyone think that was a bad episode?! It was freaking brilliant!
Sure, it may not have been big on action, or much CGI, but it was excellent without either. It was a good psychological thrill, something I absolutely love.

As far as content and structure goes, I can't decide which one of you is possessed by the Midnight creature. Is Josh copying Lana or is Lana stealing Josh's thoughts?!
an alien takes over someone, there is confusion over who else may be involved and then the mistrust in your fellow man comes out
an am dram compact half hour(with the exception of Mr Tennant) version of The Thing methinks
one to put next to (Conquest for the )Planet Of The (Apes) Ood for riffing on past sci fi classics
everyones a magpie nowadays though
i didnt mourn the loss of cgi in this weeks episode
after Miss Evangelistas cgi laughable face **** up reveal last week it was a blessing that all we had was the bobbins shot of the city view from the cockpit
how can anyone sympathise or care about characters that appear on and off screen within a very small amount of time just for one episode
there was no emotional involvement in the hostess who saved everyone
so when she gave up her life it was no biggie as she had a couple of lines and we didnt have much insight into her character
i think a lot of people are falling for the "Dot Cotton effect"...those one off episodes of regular shows that feature one or two characters for the whole duration and we are supposed to marvel at their thespian skills and the writing
ive enjoyed a couple of WHO episodes this series and unlike most on here this wasnt one
you cant like them all
I thought it was marvelous how well-developed most of the individuals were over such a short time. Each person was unique from the rest, and even the driver and mechanic were given distinct personalities in the short time they were on screen.
Perhaps it takes a certain knack for human empathy to be able to sympathize so quickly, because I know I was. I quite liked Dee Dee, and I was cheering on Jethro when he tried to man up and defend the Doctor.
The emotional involvement with the Hostess' sacrifice hits hardest when the Doctor asks for her name, and you realize not one of them knows.
I'm guessing if you didn't like this one or Gridlock, VSW77, you just don't have a taste for human drama.

I liked the episode, i think i understand why they did not reveal "it" this way we are put in there situation, confused about "it" and what it wants, it was really great to show how people react in those circumstances and everyone acted in a different manner, also it showed that while "it" was learning all it was indeed learning was how to back stab and be cruel.
I am sorry VSW77 but there is nothing you can really pick on, the story was well done, and the characters were well detailed more then we can say for the likes of Jenny and the Hath.
I liked how no one bothered to learn of her name as well, she was the bravest of them all the real, forgotten hero like most people in the real world are.
My dislike for one episode of Doctor Who is not an excuse for someone to make a silly character dissection about how i view "human" drama or my lack of empathy and to be very picky the Doc aint human and neither was the "villain" of the piece
if your commenting on the personally i feel out of time cliched mum and dad and emo kid as being unique you obviously dont watch much "human drama"
i may have missed something but why were the human characters so noughties?
just when was this episode set?
You say each person was unique?
a professor and his assistant and a lone female who the doctor takes a shine to
not particularly unique in the Whoniverse are they really?
there are a lot of mixed reviews and opinions of this episode all over the web
this is a very low member contributed to thread...(doesnt matter maybe thats a good thing you get a chance to read every post)and although im on my own here im not out there..its split right down the middle on the other Who forums
As for Jenny and The Hath not being very well developed well thats what happens when you get 45 mins an episode and everything to resolve in this short time
Jenny will be back and thats when well get much more from her
don't bite my head off over the fact that you don't like an episode and other people do....i really don't care....i just enjoyed the episode and i don't see how you can logically dislike it...we don't need to start petty squabbles over this.
i was mostly replying to the forum member with the nintendo avatar not you unfortunatley
the Jenny and Hath comment was a late edit
im not biting anyones head off
funny isnt it
you are mirroring the characters in last nights episode with your reply
i didnt like it and ive said why
personally a bad Who episode will never be truly bad because Tennant is just so ****ing good
hes so up there with Baker and Pertwee
now lets concentrate on next weeks episode
is anyone on here still unaware about the big bad of the finale as id like to see some talk about that and the return of a series one character who isnt Rose,Mickey,Jackie,Jack or a Dalek.
"Not you unfortunately", what am i spared Vintage's wrath...
and yes you are biting peoples heads off, your doing it again right now, i guess one could say you are getting defensive, over a tv show no less...interesting.
