definately a lightsaber! they can cut through anything except another light saber. Just don't drop it on the floor of a space ship otherwise you will get major hull dammage lol.
From a few stuff in the recent days, that i've read:
-A deathwand(pen sized weapon capable of frying minds)
-Flechette Rifle
-Necron Gauss Flayer
-Melta Gun
Its more or less the death wand that i want the most.
Hmm... I like the Gravity Gun from Half Life especially when it is blue.
As for movies, I think red matter (Star Trek 2009) would be the end all especially if you use more than just one little drop of it. Talk about wiping out a solar system there, including its sun.
For physical weaponry and coolness factor, then yaa... Lightsabre, green!
I did post Lightsaber as my favourite sci-fi weapon back 2005 (conversation was very heated then!), and it still is but for a blaster-type weapon and a perfect addition I bring forward the blaster from the 1980s 'V' tv series. Amazing design.

As much as the lightsaber is a popular choice...throughout the entire movie series there have been so much discrepancies as to how powerful the lightsaber is...
In Empire & Jedi, there were scenes of the lightsaber hitting metal railings & either slicing through them or simply just bouncing off.
Then in Phantom Menace they're quite capable of cutting through/melting huge hangar doors....
Plus the weight too; I remember reading Hamill was told by GL that they were heavy to wield so that's why he didn't do any fancy moves like they did in the PT.
I think Hamill was peeved a bit when he saw the effortless movements in the PT...
