Wow, someone's getting a little worked up over semantics.
That's a very obscure definition of theory and is not how the word is generally used, the first three are the ones that are generally used.

The branch of a science or art consisting of its explanatory statements, accepted principles, and methods of analysis, as opposed to practice: a fine musician who had never studied theory.
A set of theorems that constitute a systematic view of a branch of mathematics.
And actually, if you want to really be technical, in science very very rarely is anything said to be disproven or proven until there is an overwhelming amount of evidence. It's either supported or not supported.
They were proven wrong. All Im saying is that it isnt an opinion by definition. An opinion is a thought or judgement whose truth cannot be verified. Can we Verify the world isnt Flat? Yes we can. It was a theory..An assumption based on limited knowledge. Thats all I'm saying.
It was a Fact at the time the world was Flat. then it was no longer a fact cuz it was disproven. I didnt mean Facts could be wrong and still be Facts, I worded that poorly and I apologize. I mean they can be disproven and therefore are no longer facts. Like is something everyone believes today and we all agree is a Fact today is disproven tomorrow, does that change the fact that we thought it was a fact today?
bah dont give me that, that was the definition i was using. I can chalk it up to misunderstanding though =). Just as long as we are clear I didn't misuse the word. And im not mad , I just am excitable in debates lol. and as we all know emotion is hard to dictate in writing!

What the crikey? It wasn't a fact that the Earth was flat was it? Jesus Christ. Am I really sitting here trying to convince someone that the Earth has never been flat?
They believed it was, that doesn't mean it was. They believe it was for sure, that doesn't mean it was. Because it has never been, so their opinion was wrong.
There was no way to verify that it was flat, because it wasn't. It was never a fact. Simply believing something to be true does NOT make it fact, in anyway.
DUH, thats my point. He verified it was round. A.C. said they couldnt verify the world was round so it was an opinuion by definition but i pointed out they could verify it. =P are you actually reading the posts?
Ok A.C. I will give you that , , it was never a Fact. but was believed to be so. if you wanna be Technical about it. Still dont mean it was an opinion though.
He was saying that the Earth couldn't be verified to be FLAT. Because it wasn't. YOU'RE not reading the posts.
And believing something doesn't make it fact. According to that idea, God's existance would be fact because people believe in it. I could decide that I believe that it'll start raining pink marshmellows and it'll be fact.
