Bardock42 is a whimpering pussy now who lost his flare to debate vigorously and just spouts senseless and thinly veiled puns here and there. You nazi pr*ck. Get your balls back from whoever you sold them to, you fat f*ck. What happened to the manly, chubby German big mouth we once knew, who'd flatten ignorance with a solid argument? Now it's like Andy Dick meets John Candy. You hybrid beefcake. Suck my c*ck
Mainstream Hip Hop died when NWA broke, and it hasn't been back since. M2 will have "Sucka Free Sundays" and all these supposed "Hip Hop" artists, but never feature BEP, Common, The Roots, Mos Def, or any other prominant Hip Hop artist.
Wu Tang Clan, while creative, are just a bunch of guys with a gimmick and non-sensical, non-directional lyrics. Hip Hop has always been about having a message, or just waxing poetic & nostalgia.
Off that list i would say Ice T, Ice Cube, Wu-Tang, Cypress Hill and Arrested Development DO deserve to be on the list. They have all had strong messages in their songs just not as consistently as PE and BDP. Ice T's "escape the killing fields", Ice Cube's "alive on arrival" are examples of this. Arrested Development were all about the message, it may have been a flower power message but that was just their style.
As for VH1's list, how are you gonna put Salt n Pepper above KRS 1?

Of course Ice Cube belongs If NWA belong, then Cube belongs, seeing as they made their only classic album largely thanks to his input, and then he went off and made two albums that were as good as SOC, and one which was better.
Non-directional yes, but non-sensical, very rarely. True they use a whole lot of personal slang and pretty obscure pop-culture references, but on the whole most of their lyrics make sense, no more or less than most other hip-hop artists. And they're mostly battle raps anyway, so they're not really trying to put across a message, exceptions being songs like Tearz. Anyway, to me that's what makes them so great. We need a break from the preaching. And who in hip-hop makes more sense than GZA? Or has produced as much audio-gold as RZA? Or (was) as original and entertaining as Method Man? Or as tongue-twistingly powerful as Inspectah Deck? Wu own that list, and almost any other they may be on.
