The lovable yet cunning Marvin the Martian was first introduced to audiences in the 1948 short, Haredevil Hare. In the skit, Bugs Bunny is reluctantly sent to the moon and encounters Marvin the Martian in the middle of a scheme to destroy Earth. The bunny thwarts Marvins plans, but ends up blowing up most of the Moon in the process. The character was envisioned as a new type of villain for Bugs Bunny. Where many of the shorts' personalities were bombastic, Marvin was quiet and reserved. Despite this nature, the alien was still extremely dangerous and intelligent.

This creature is known as Marvin the Martian, but watching his original shorts will reveal something interesting - that name is never actually uttered. 1952's The Hasty Hare mentions him as the Commander of Flying Saucer X-2, but this is obviously more of a title than a name. Not only was he not given a proper name, but one did not come to him until decades after his original appearance. When the potential for merchandising came into the picture, it was finally decided to give him a memorable and marketable name, and who can forget something like Marvin the Martian?

Rappers are known for their inclination towards pop culture references. Nothing proves that Marvin has solidified his place in pop culture more than the several times these wordsmiths have mentioned him in verse. In the song "Mouthing Off", Ludacris talks about blowing up the earth with the pew 36 explosive space modulator. Ludacris isn't the only one throwing a reference to the weapon into his lyrics; T-Pain does the same thing in his song "Getcha Roll On". Many rappers are all about the luxury lifestyle, and what could possibly be more luxurious than possessing an alien weapon.

When NASA sent the Spirit rover to Mars, they included pop culture's most beloved Martian on it. The character was also on the mission patch worn by those involved with the project. It's a cute gesture, but a little strange when more thought is put into it. After all, Marvin is constantly intent on destroying the Earth. Wouldn't putting him on the patch for a Mars mission be some kind of bad omen? Either way, it's still a cute gesture.
