Disputed call, that one, Some say the whole thing was a fake designed to confuse people. Some say GL changed his mind mid-way because Revenge was not appropriate for a Jedi. Some combine the two above.
Some say that it was changed because it was too close for the proposed title of Star Trek II- The Revenge of Khan. Amusingly thios was later changd in production as well.
No story has ever been officially confirmed, so... there you go...
