I wouldn't be surprised if you were. Kratos' character model alone trumps what most FF games have in their entirety. Forget the superior art direction and character animations, the latter of which, in no judgement to FFXIII's quality as a whole, borderline on being utterly dreadful in this game (but in retrospect, a majority of JRPG games have stiff and/or sub-par character animations). FFXIII might be a new standard on a technical level among the traits typical of modern Square Enix games (and that's necessarily a good thing), but among the gaming medium as a whole? Not quite. Having more well-rendered hair doesn't help with it either.
FF needs to just stick with in house original music. Outsourcing generic pop songs for the ending theme is just lazy. In prior games some of the most memorable original tracks were the ending themes. In XIII, it was just distractingly cheesy.

Well, music has been an important part of the Final Fantasy series from the 1st game way back on the NES. It's not even just FF games it's all RPGs, music is of paramount importance. Having an unoriginal pop song in the credits really doesn't give you the same feel as a piece of music composed specifically for the game.
Final Fantasy soundtracks have always been brilliant and for the most part FFXIII's doesn't disappoint however the Leona Lewis song is very much a negative.
I do believe that music has really taken a hit in the latest games. Losing Nobou as composer has hurt them... Not to mention doing away with the fanfare. I don't imagine anyone was happy when they finished their 1st battle on FFXIII and didn't hear a satisfying sound of "da, da, da, daa, duh, da, da, da, daa"

Overall I do too. The battle theme didn't get annoying although is not memorable. The map music (if you can call it a map) is generally very good. And the end boss music I like a lot.

FF XIII is, in my opinion, one of the weaker entries for the series. However, that doesn't mean that it isn't a remarkable game. My only gripe was that the game is too linear. There was hardly any exploration, rather just go to Point A to Point B to Point C, etc.
