I saw it last night, so awful. The dialogue, the directing, the acting, well just about everything was terrible. It's so ridiculous, and very boring. I was nodding off fifty minutes in.
i'm glad i'm not the only one who didn't like it. Tooooooooo many poses. Everybody in every scene was doing some kind of stupid pose. What's up with the side story with the senate and the wife and stuff, i wonder if anybody gave a fcuk about that.
ONLY redeeming factor were the immortals. They looked dope!
oh yeah, i'm going to start an immortal crew. We wear those costumes on halloween then run around jumping on cars and stealing candies!!! Who's in?

Gender: Male Location: Chaos.
There can only be CHAOS!
It's sometime in August. Around the middle of the month I believe. Read it on comingsoon.net, deleted scenes include midgets riding armless giants, apparently.
i finally saw it last night and what i expected, i got....i dont think their was an excuse for the flimsy dialogue and if it was somehow deliberately cheesy and bad then it should have been made more obvious (like sin city was). the only person who made it seem that way was butler as Leonidas.
the fight scenes were staggering...i especially loved it just after the spartans have broken the 1st persian attack and they march out from the mouth of the hot gates to slaughter them (see below)

its a shame that the hollywood money men were stung by troy and kingdom of heaven and only saw fit to give snyder a budget of $60,000,000 because had this film been given more it might have been even better.
i wouldn't mind seeing a prequel and sequel...ala the battles at marathon and plataea 10 years prior and 1 year after respectively...the prequel could also involve the battles that the spartans waged to try and unite greece against the persians...between marathon and thermopylae
all in all...and excellent film...and because of its success i think that there might well be another of the same line.
butler himself said that while he saw 300 almost as his swansong...he didn't want to rule out a "300: 2" but while he may have been speaking metaphorically...he may not have been.
Herodotus of Halicarnassus, who wrote the first history of this war, gave the total size of Xerxes' army present in Greece as follows:
Units Numbers
Infantry 1,700,000 Herodotus VII,60
Cavalry 80,000 Herodotus VII,87
Arabs and Libyans 20,000 Herodotus VII,184
Greek troops allied with Persians 324,000
Historians have argued about the number of persians for centuries. The number ranges from 100,000 to 2 million depending on the historian. Ctesias's figure of 800,000 battle troops for the Persian army is accepted by many historians as accurate, while many claim that Herodotus' claim of 1.7 million includes both battle and support troops. Among these, I find Dr. Manousos Kampouris' analysis to be profound and solidly thought out.
Nevertheless, the movie obviously takes many artistic liberties, and I don't find that to be something bad, since the movie aims to be visually delightful, and achieves that goal, in my opinion. Nevertheless, I also found the movie (as well as the comic) to be very useful in the sense that it makes you want to know more about ancient history.
I highly recommend Steven Presfield's book "Gates of Fire" to those who liked the movie and the comic, though it is a novel, it is pretty accurate historically, and VERY erntertaining to read. One of the best books I have ever read, and the best historic novel along with Valerio Massimo Manfredi's ALEXANDROS.
To be honest the film was OK not of the quality of gladiator or bravehearth (Which still holds the number 1 title followed closely by gladiator) As its been said the dialogue was just bloody awful which for a film like this isn't a bad thing as its all action. The action scenes were superb so was the visual for this film definitely Oscar worthy. There were a couple of scenes that contradicted themselves in this film like Leonidas breaking the law of Sparta and then towards the end bringing the law of Sparta into his plight for his men to not retreat or surrender. And i was confused when the captain son gets his head cut of and the captain started crying and showing all that emotion. In normal circumstances sure such emotions are allowed but through out the film the Spartans are portrayed as unemotional and hardened men and we are led to believe that is there way of life. Although some may have a problem with my analysis of the film i would like to state its IMHO and that i respect others opinion and would appreciate it if they did the same for mine. All in all it was an enjoyable film not of epic proportions but enough to warrant it as acceptable and watchable so for those wondering whether to see it yes go you will have fun.[

Likewise. Saw it last night as well. Unlike most books I know, this movie was pretty damn faithful to the graphic novel but not as faithful as the Sin City movie and comic book relationship. The fight scenes were pretty damn awesome, most noteworthy was that scene where the Spartans had driven the Persians off the cliff. I've only got a few beefs with that movie, particularly the lack of a defiant Leonida's in the end screaming "DIE!" while his men were being slaughtered as is what happened in the book.
Gender: Male Location: between apathy and indifference
Actually, I think I read that from a source other than Pressfield's book. I can't recall, but I believe it was a book on discipline and tactics of various military units through history. Wish I could remember the title or author....
Manfredi's 3 part trilogy on the lfe of alexander is the greatest work of historical fiction EVER. (well, maybe that and Graves' "I Claudius")

Spartans encouraged homosexuality to create a greater sense of brotherhood in the ranks. Not that I have anything against homosexuals, but for any 14 year olds out there, be wary of homoerotica posing as historical epics
Within its own 'genre' or 'style' the movie was awesome. It gave an over the top fantasy version of a well known and spectacular moment in history. Yes the dialogues were poor, the actors took poses every time they came on screen, the movie was filled with slow motion, but it's all part of the 'style'.
To put in words some people might understand, some might not and some might think they do, my friends and I called it the roleplay version of the battle of Thermopylae.

I wasn't sure this movie would live up to the hype when I first heard about it, but since I bought Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut and it came with a free 300 ticket, I decided I had nothing to lose. Thanks to that free ticket, I didn't miss out on a great movie, and I even paid to see it a second time with a group of friends. Boy, I can't wait until this movie comes out on DVD so I can expand my collection of great DVDs.
