Singer will never win. He'll be criticized for making a film that pays homage to the Donner films, he'll be criticized for making a film that steers completely away from the Donner films, he'll be criticized for making a film that focuses on character development with a few actions scenes here and there (like the Superman film that is out right now) and he'll be criticized for making a film that is nothing but action with very few character developments.
IMO I believe that Singer made a great film. There was passion involved with this, it just oozed on the screen (scenes like the little homages to the two first movies, or the Superman good night speech to his son come to mind), and he took great care that (like Donner) this Superman film received the respect it deserved. I'd much rather have a character developing film like this, with great action sequences here and there, than the infamous Kevin Smith / Jon Peters script (with all of its spiders and polar bears) that came THIS CLOSE to being filmed. Or the JJ Abrams non-Krypton blowing, Superman-in-a-matrix outfit, Lex being a martial-arts-kryptonian script that was going to be directed by that Charlie's Angel guy.

Agreed, people are just hating on Singer.
I loved Returns, its fits perfectly in after Superman and Superman II.
I hear alot of trash talking, but nobody saying how they would have made a Superman movie, just the parts that they didn't like about this one.
As for those other films that almost got made, it just goes to show how good of a job Singer actually did, since this movie fits the style, theme, and ideas of the first two films.
Doomsday, John Stewart, a world that neither wants nor needs Superman (due to having found new heroes). Superman having to work hard to get back in with the public. Superman having to fight Doomsday when the other heroes fall. Him trying to convince Lois (who knows he's Superman) that he's back for good and won't leave her again (they'd been together as a couple, and while she's not neccessarily against him, but he broke her heart, and the conflict in her knowing that he's needed and at the same time knowing she hurts every time he's around is something new for lois i think.). thats a very quick summary...
