When it comes to underground hip-hop it's usually the other way around, though. Amazing lyrics but average beats.

I hear "Real big" by Mannie Fresh and I cant help but notice how HORRID his lyrics are. But the song is so catchy.

haha, that's mainstream for ya. As long as a song has a hot beat it will sell.

I know, but for a diehard fan of rap, it ruins the song.

Rogue Jedi i know what ur saying for the most part old school rap dominates the new school shit especially when it comes down to the number of quality joints on the cd's, example muddy waters, liquid swords, 36 chambers, pauls boutique, breaking atoms, ready to die, stress: extinction agenda, word life, fear of a black planet, cuban linx midnight mauraders to name a few are dope straight thru. The only recent shit that ive heard that doesnt have any skippable tracks are: marco polo- port authority, mf doom - mm.food(yes i enjoy the cluster of skits in the middle of the cd) blackalicious - nia, madviallainy, jurassic 5 - quality control, ghostface - fishscale, can ox - cold vein, and thats quite literally it, and most of those are atleast 3 or 4 years old.
However saying that theres a shit load of dope underground emcess like aesop rock, murs, binary star, el-p, cuninglynguists, immortal technique, tech nine, madlib etc but none of their cds i would ever consider classics.
unrelated but wut u peeps think of kayne west new shit?
I think RJ is talking about older artists than that. Pre 1994.
Haven't heard the new Kanye and don't care to. Have you?

na i havent heard the new kayne but ive seen the music vids of the 2 singles out and they have both been dope. I'm also interested in the new madlib, new wutang and the ghost doom collabo
Oh No's new album is surprisingly a lot better than Madlib's.
