The studio's take of a domestic gross works out to about 50%, their take of foreign gross is less than that afaik, thus the emphasis is usually on the domestic gross of a film.
Superman Returns only made back probably about 30-40% of it's budget on domestic ticket sales. It maybe made back 3/4 of it's budget with its worldwide gross.
For an even more glaring example of why SR is considered a box office disappointment; see the production budget of Dark Knight.
When the most threatening villain of a superhero film is gravity... you can't be surprised when it disappoints at the box office...
The only reason the SUPERMAN RETURNS budget was so huge is they wrapped up all the costs for failed incarnations during the decade previous to Singer taking over. OF COURSE it wasn't going to make as much money.
Mark Millar's Proposed Superman Trilogy
Source:G4 September 2, 2008
Mark Millar (Wanted) talked to G4 about his proposed Superman movie project which has a mysterious American director attached. They pitched the idea to Warner Bros. Pictures and hope to get word over the next few weeks. If the studio decides to go with their version, they'd like to be shooting by next summer:
"I've had this plan for like 10 years for a big three-picture Superman thing, like a Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. One to be released each year." Millar said.
You can watch the video interview using the player below!
Are you aware how much Mark Millar likes to talk & have his name in the media? Prior to Superman Returns, he engaged in a public bet over who would be cast in the main role. He's a publicity hog.

If Miller did get attached to the project and didn't do as good a job as he's proposing he'd do, I'd track him down myself.
Now, onto other matters, I think a darker take on Superman is exactly what the character needs. I'd still love to see Brandon come back as Superman.

As of now just a few moments ago another inside source confirmed that yes they are waiting for Chris Nolan to sign the deal with the next Batman, and that they want him to commit to a July 2011 release. If that happens then the following superhero films will be released.
Green Lantern Summer 2010
Batman 3 Summer 2011
New Superman reboot Summer 2012
Also in the mix is THE FLASH.
Ummm.... if this is true, wouldnt this be bad times for release dates if Marvel is coming out with their movies that has been set in motion well before the DC movies?
They're trying to compete with Marvel, and it's going to be a slippery slope for DC. It's like fighting a losing battle...everyone has become accustomed to Marvel delivering the goods, and DC has only put out a select few good movies, so they are really going to have to take things up a notch if they want to get people in general hyped for their films.

True that, I've been waiting for that Wonder Woman movie since it was first announced to be in the works years ago (wasn't that about five years ago?). In any case, I really hope they don't screw up any of the heroes. I suppose as long as they don't get any directors like Brett Ratner or Sam Raimi all shall be well.
after the dark knight's good performance and returns' bad one, i think even warner realise that they have to get in the best in the business to bring their characters to the screen...

I'm still wondering who all the WB has in mind for the next Superman flick.

Speaking to the LA Times’ Geoff Boucher, Superman: The Movie director Richard Donner had a simple answer to the question of how to get the Superman movie franchise back on track: give it to Geoff Johns.
But maybe just maybe...it could happen, after all we still have to wait 2-4 years for it.
Johns will be writing Superman on a screen in the coming months, as he is writing an upcoming episode of Smallville, which will introduce the Legion of Super-Heroes to the show. <<< This could be a start/test of things to come in the future for Superman movies.

I just want a movie that really shows Superman as he is in the comics, and nothing less. I liked the idea of making the Superman universe a little darker, as long as he isn't Batman serious. Just make less comedic parts in the movie, and make things more serious.
Btw, am I the only one who'd like Clark to be portrayed closer to TAS in that he's not really a geek, but is still a bit of a clutz?

john's recent brainiac arc in action comics was a real thing of beauty imo... johns would be one of the better choices, imo, to write a superman movie...
