It's never explained in the movie but I just thought it was the difference in gravity between earth and krypton that gave the strength and speed. Although it is implied that krypton is a bigger planet when the terraforming begins

They got affected because apparently the helmet was shielding their senses, when the helmet was destroyed they got exposed to use their senses which overloads them.
