It's true. A person can throw around hints galore and the other is in denial, that's why it's important to be up front and honest. I find hints don't work for many people. Sometimes a sincere sentence or two works best. In the end, it is really a kinder way to end it and don't wait until it's at an angry place of "Don't you get it??!!?"...It's harder to speak up, but really you're doing the other person a big favor.
some people will keep you waiting a long time while they decide if you are the right person for them.

sometimes things that are worth having are worth waiting for. sometimes waiting will do nothing but hurt you.
all you can do is gamble and hope you dont crap out.

So...people aren't forced to wait, they choose to. Although, in the case you mentioned, it wouldn't be knowing that something is worth waiting for, would it? Because you don't know if said person is even going to choose you.
Depends on the circumstances of the situation. If someone is going through a life crisis, and their judgement is impaired to a certain degree, you can either A: Be there for them to help them through the situation....or B: Decide to look for greener pastures....
There are many different factors you have to consider when it comes to "waiting" on someone, or deciding that they are worth waiting for. If, in your heart, you know that it is a losing battle, then you are better off walking. If, by chance, you think there is the slightest chance that things can be worked out, you stick.
