Sorry if this is a repeat thread but someone I know really well is going into hospital next week to have a brain tumour removed followed by a course of chemo and she asked me to recommend her books that she can take in with her that will make her laugh on her hopeful road to recovery. Any suggestions?

Yeah, that's probably a better suggestion considering the situation.

My choice for the funniest book would have to be "The Henry Root Letters", rediculous concept, brilliantly exercised, had tears from laughing too much.

Red Dwarf Omnibus (all 3 in one) has to be the funniest book Ive ever read in my life, I normally read books only once, at the most twice if its confusing. But ive read Red Dwarf about 6 times and I roll up every time. It is absolutly hilarious, similiar to the "Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy" which someone also recommended, but "wierder imo.

the umpire strikes back. an older book. basically a series of anecdotes from a major league umpire. hilarious. even if you don't like baseball it was funny as hell.
