By 'he' I meant Mr. Abrams, of course. There's no point making a film just for the fans. The franchise itself does have some public interest left in it though, so if you concentrate on that rather than just trying to continue a dead modern series...
Doing it from a classic POV is the best way to keep everyione happy, fans and general public. It keeps the basic name and basic theme, it has continuity enough for fans and doesn't require any sort of insider knowledge for general members of the public.

I really want to see it, but I don't want to have to do mountains of research beforehand just to ensure I grasp the basic concept. Obviously that's an exaggeration, but you get my drift. I like Star Trek and I think I've seen enough episodes to be able to enjoy the movie, but I can't be sure. I definitely feel more comfortable knowing it's going to be more general.
I realize most people don't have a technical background, but I think it's important to keep the movie scientifically accurate and consistent, otherwise it's just not Star Trek. This early video of the Enterprise really has me worried. Enterprise is a ship designed for space, not the surface of the planet. As such it only makes sense to construct it in space in the same manner that the International Space Station is currently being constructed in orbit. This video showing the Enterprise being constructed on the ground shows the makers have no sense of the basic concepts that Star Trek is founded on which is going to alienate a large portion of its audience. If this scene is really representative, I predict a huge disaster for this film.

I watched the new movie trailer again, and yes they are building the enterprise on a planet(earth? i guess), you can see a city behind it, and workers taking off thier masks and such...that really does not bother me...although its interesting why they would do it, i dont see it as a bad thing
