Okay, so after looking over Big Boss' thread, I decided that sticking in a bio and career highlights would be fitting for the legend.

1954 - Bikini Atoll test subject. Left sterile as a result of his exposure to radiation.
1964 - First person to perform a HALO (High-Altitude Low-Opening) jump during the Virtuous Mission. Also eliminates Colonel Volgin, the Cobra Unit, and The Boss during Operation Snake Eater. Later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by President Lyndon Johnson ad is also given the title of 'Big Boss.'
1970 - Thwarted the San Hieronymo Takeover by eliminating the rouge FOX Commander Gene. Acquires the Metal Gear schematics and the Army's Heaven funds.
Early 1970s - Forms The Patriots with Major Zero, Signt (Donald Anderson) and Para-Medic (Dr. Clark). Recruits both Ocelot and EVA into the group.
1974 - Les Enfants Terribles. The sons of Big Boss are born. Big Boss severs his ties to the Patriots as a result of this and becomes a mercenary. He finds the group Militaires Sans Frontieres, wich would see action in South America, kicking off Peace Walker.
Early 1980s - Fought in the Mozambican Civil War, rescues Frank Jager (for the third time), and takes both him and Naomi Hunter to America. Also takes over as FOXHOUND Commander once again.
Early 1990s - Begins construction of Outer Heaven. Five years later, is thwarted by Solid Snake.
1997 - Zanzibarland Disturbance. Big Boss is presumable killed by Solid Snake (flamethrower-to-da-head). He will be placed in a nanomachine-induced coma for the next decade or so. Voice Actors: David Hayter and Akio Ōtsuka (as young Big Boss, in MGS3, Portable Ops and Peace Walker); Richard Doyle and Chikao Ōtsuka (as old Big Boss, in MGS4)

It was a close call, but I can safely say that Big Boss himself is a trendsetter. The first Metal Gear came out in July of 1987, which makes Big Boss the first character (videogame-wise) to sport the eyepatch.
Street Fighter came out the following month, and Sagat followed suit, also sporting the eyepatch. Other one-eyed favorites include Jubei Yagyu (from Samurai Showdown/Spirits) and Heidern.
B.B., Sagat, and Heidern all wear eyepatches on their right eyes, while Jubei has his over his left.

Based on certain information from MGS3, it can be implied that Big Boss is the first major VG character to contract an STD.
