For someone who has never really gotten into horror and hasn't seen hardly any really good horror films, then the top 10 absolutely crucial films I'd have to recommend would be....
1. The Exorcist
2. Dawn of the Dead (original)
3. Halloween (original)
4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
5. A Nightmare on Elm Street
6. The Evil Dead
7. The Shining
8. An American Werewolf in London
9. Night of the Living Dead (original)
10. Tie : Hellraiser / Phantasm (either one)
There's so many more I could name, but I feel these 10 classics are some of the absolute very best horror films ever to grace the screen and would make any horror fan proud to recommend...

I agree with most of your list, except for High Tension (which I thought was HIGHLY overrated) and Underworld (you gotta be f**king kidding me, right?)
As for some of the crap some of these other jokers would recommend, I gotta wonder what the hell they've been smoking?!? I mean "The Grudge", "Cabin Fever", "Leprechaun", "Angel Heart", "The Ugly"..... just to name a few....Ugghhh!!! WTF???
