My 8 Mile review

Normally I'm not very into rap. But the way they portrayed a rappers talent at the shelter competitions was amazing. To be able to think up things like that, that quick is truly a skill. I think Eminem as an actor wasn't such a bad idea. He did much better than Britney Spears and Mariah Carey's break onto the big screen. (What a horror that was huh?) And as for the sex scenes...the one between him and Alex (Brittany Murphy) was intense.

Overall, I give this movie a B+

What did you think?

I thought it was a very good movie, really surprised me. Oscar? I don't think so but better then 95% of the crap nowadays? Yes. Might even find its way on my top 10 list.

Eminem also was good, not alot of range, he was either mad or depressed but got your attention, and you couldn't take your eyes off him. He did a very good job of making you forget who he was, alot of people are saying "Big deal he is just playing himself" but about 10 minutes into the movie, unless you really hate Eminem with a passion, you will forget its him.

My main concern going in was the middle, we all know what happens in the beginning and the end, but what about the 1 hour or so in between. But to my surprise the movie was pretty funny, which you can't tell from the trailers. The concept is simple, "Rabbit" and 4 of his friends driving around Detroit in a beat-up car, but it works and its very entertaining. If the Oscars gave a award for "Best Ensemble" cast, this movie would run away with it. "Chedderbob" came this close from stealing the movie from Eminem, he did the best "stupid white friend" I have seen in a while.

You wait a pretty long for the payoff but its well worth the wait. The 20 minute final "battle" scene probably got the most emotional reaction in the theater I have seen, which is really important to me, "Jackass" seemed funnier because of all the people around me laughing. Also bear in mind the theater carded so nobody under 17 was allowed. I'm sure when I see the movie again on DVD, it won't come off as well. The ending left a lot people moaning, I won't give it away but I can say I liked that they didn't go the corny, predicatable, route.

The film is very raw, 35% of words used in this film would give you detention at school, and the rapping doesn't pull any punches. At times it does feel that instead of telling a story, they are trying to break sterotypes or prove points, Rabbit is friends with a gay guy and protects his sister and mother, no guns or violence beside some slapstick stuff and a couple of fist fights, etc. But overall if your a fan of Rap or Eminem you will love it and even if your not you might enjoy it, the "Rapping" is only a backdrop intill the end and its not a "Eminem Video" you don't hear any of his songs intill the credits.

***1/2 out of four.

lvubun totally ripped my review to shreads. Lol.

I'm not surprised it scored so much in the box office. Everyone was so into it coming out. I just hope people left feeling it was money well spent like I did.

Did you mean 'coming out' as in leaving the cinema, obsessed?

In any case, the good reaction to this film has certainly buried the 'straight to video' theories that some had.

everyone knew it would be popular because all the mtv watching kids are going to see it cuz of all the publicity its getting, that by no means makes it good though. i stand by my previous statement.

Sure, but the critical reaction doesn't pan with a movie that would only be liked by the MTV kids.
