Potter Film Franchise in trouble

Whilst not the 100% favourite films (or books) of a lot of posters around here, there is no denying the huge impact of these films, which have become almost as big film-wise ans the books have done literature wise. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone is the second highest grossing film of all time and it seems Chamber of Secrets will be one hell of a money spinner as well.

The franchise looked like an endless goldmine with one film a year planeed for seven years, all the way trorugh Harry's school development. But now the whole thing is falling apart as a continuou- and, it seems, never ending- spate of problems derails the money-making train.

1. The director, who was originally down to do all 7, has now pulled out, saying he is burnt-out
2. The stars are all growing too fast. They may have to be replaced, but many involved with the film doubt this will be well-received- especially as a replacement for the much missed Richard Harris needs to be found.
3. More star trouble- The parents of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) and Emma Watson (Hermione) have demanded, reasonably, that they be allowed some normal schooling time (having spent much of the last two years being tutored on-set). The delays this has cuased for the third film., The Prisoner of Azkaban, have already caused it to almost certainly slip to mid-2004 and maybe later.
4. JK Rowling's delay with book five has long irritated publishers, but now it may frustrate the filmmakers as well. There is still little sign of it and if the films keep going they may get stuck at number 4
5. Having made huge films out the first two books, many book fans commentated thst there would be big troubles when doing number 4, The Goblet of Fire- in that it is 4 times longer than the first book! And indeed the man writing the scripts has declared that the Goblet of Fire CANNOT BE MADE INTO A FILM! He has suggested breaking it into two parts for two films to be shown in the same year. To make things worse, Rowling has confirmed that book five will be longer still.

Each delay only makes things worse, and there are fears that the franchise may now stall where it is. A shame, to be sure, because the demand for these films is HUGE...

As much as I like the films if all 7 didn't get made I'm sure we'd live...that's my $.02.

Yeah, I dont care much for Harry Potter anyways.
I'm sure by the time they release the 4th one, a bunch of those little kids would have grown tired of Potter and moved on to other stuff anyways.

Potter is popular with all ages, Tex, and most of the 'little kids' who liked the first book are now mid-teens anyway and still loving it.

But in any case, the point is still that this is the first time such a major franchise has started to collpase in this way- if it happens it will be a big part of cinema history.

1) Not sure that Chris Columbus said he would do all 7. In an interview on Film 2002 I remember him saying that he was doing the second, but wasn't sure if he wanted to do any more as it would bcome repetative.

2) The stars are growing at the same rate as their onscreen counterparts so this should be rather moot. Each book covers 1 school year, or so thought.

3) They only film for 12 weeks or so don't they? It's not as if they're filming from the enture year. True their are other commitments aside from the filming aspect.

4) At the UK premiere of Chamber of Secrets J.K.Rowling said something like the 5th book was either weeks away or had already gone to the publishers. Can't remember. True it is late.

5) This is a REAL issue for the movie series. 5 is also hard as JKR did reveal that one of the [SPOILER - highlight to read]: main characters is killed in book 5.

If they start to slip on production then the whole thing could fall in a disgraceful heap. Personally I like the films, but have not read the books yet.

1. He said he would do all 7 when he originally took the job.
2. They are growing TOO fast and as I pointed out, the delays are making it worse. This is all coming from the people making the films, C22, so if they say it is a problem, it is a problem.
3. The commitments for the film are at least six months worth, I understand. In any case, again, this is a genuine problem- the need for normal schooling has made Azkaban slip.

1. Don't doubt your words on that one, but his stepping away from HP after #2 wasn't totally unexpected. He's not GL after all, i.e. Too stupid to know better. (GL, not CC)

2. Slippages aside, this is a dumb thing for the studio to say. They're growing at the same rate as their characters, if they managed to keep to the 1 a year schedule, which it clearly seems they won't now.

3. I wonder if the schooling issue is because of slipping grades? If it is then the priorities are correct I guess. I wonder how the kids feel about it?

I guess this could become something of a vicious circle for the studio and I find it VERY doubtful that the audience would completely accept the recasting of Harry, Ron or Hermione at any stage. Especially when you consider the age of the core audience.

The re-casting problem is certainly what the studio thinks is true.

I understand the problem is that Daniel is growing almost freakishly fast- 8 inches during filming and still not stopping. He is becoming not the Harry the fans know, and the six month delay is really making that worse.
