Yes, earlier criticial vibe has said this also (including PC Gamer UK), and it IS worrying seeing how much they have gone on about single player. Big shame.

well ime not too worried, my main interest is developing my squad and seeing the overall climaxes and endings of the stories. Ime used to bland and repetitive gameplay and environments from most RTS/RPG games.
Jonny Ebert (lead designer) talks about the amount of work they are planning to put into the game. Nice- but I do wonder if this has come out a bit early. For sure, Blizzard would have held it back another six months at least. That said, with the first part of SCII still lacking a release date, there is something to be said against perfectionism also. I am not sure if 'rushed' is the right word for DOWII... but I won't be surprised if I feel it was a little 'undercooked' when it comes out, and that it will take a few months of new content for it to feel right. A lot of people theorise that it's coming out as they are running scared of SCII hype- damn shame if so. Stand tall and be proud, says I; DoW was better than Starcraft (though it did have five years on it).
Meanwhile- I see this is coming out on 360 as well! Interesting... I guess the online modes will not be compatible though, like L4D. Shame.

As far as DOWII and SCII go, rumors swirl that Blizzard will start up SCII's beta around the same time DOWII is released in an attempt to dwarf the release a bit. Not surprising, they've done similar things in the past with beta releases.

It's definitely a competitor. Futuristic space rts with similar races. Though yeah, after seeing it in action I'd agree that as far as gameplay goes they're probably going to be pretty different.

I'm pretty sure Stacraft is a lot more popular though then Dawn of War (Maybe not Warhammer 40K, but DoW). Out of all the gaming forums I go to this is the only one where DOWII has actually gotten any attention. All the hardcore RTS gamers I know haven't even heard of DoW... so yeah that's not really an indicator but you get my point. I think Starcraft's more main-stream.
It might be a competitor but I think DoW2 release is to far way from Starcraft's and that I really think DoW2 is going to be hardcore niche game, while Starcraft has huge cult like following.
Campaign wise, do you unlock items etc for each squad you have, so if they die you lose everything, or are items universal upgrades you get to pick each mission?
Sure, absolutely. But like I said, Blizzard has done it before. They started their WOTLK Beta around the same time that Warhammer Online was coming out to get focus off of that game and onto theirs.
Campaign wise all unlocks are permanent. It is the Squad Leaders that upgrade and they cannot actually die even if you lose every mission (though you will fail the campaign if you do that).
Reviews have mentioned the campaign being pretty easy though. Best turn up the difficulty.
... mentioning how they can adjust the game according to the stats they receive of what players are actually playing.
Waiting months before they even start another race's campaign is a darn shame though. Some of their earlier comments implied that they could be available relatively quickly.
As for the 360 version- as both versions will use the same multiplayer matchmaking system, I guess they COULD play together. But unless you have a mouse/keyboard hooked into your 360 it's not going to be much good. Lacking hotkeys is fatal.

The reports are actually some six months old now so maybe the project has been dumped (it was certainly listed on the Xbox site at one point). People are talking on the official site forums as if it is going ahead but I cannot trace the logic back.

Power and requisition are shared resources so it doesnt matter if you or your teammate gets there first. If you want to practise just start a game 1v1 with the computer on easy or something.
