Another thing- I hope it is just the way the characters were specced that the Jedi had to go for the little guys, leaving the big bastard to the Trooper.

Because... that's not right, surely? If I am a Jedi, and I have to get to point blank range of whatever I want to fight, whilst the Trooper can stand way back with no problems, then I should at least feel that I am the one who, once I get there, can slice the hell out of the biggest foe there, yeah?

I am unsure what the point of a Jedi Knight is if he's not going toe to toe with the big bads.

It seems that the Jedi is the one that has to go toe-to-toe with other saber-wielders, that at least would make sense.

GW > ...just about every online game.

They better do some sort of free demo/beta for this. Because seriously, I'm not going to pay to play a WoW clone, SW or not. I won't pay to play WoW itself.

Bugged me as well, but you know how I like to play that sort of thing.

See... ok, different strokes for different folks and all this, but I don't get someone with this view:

-

"FINALLY! A healer class is shown! Maybe I have missed it before, but this is the first time I saw one. This is what I want to do, I love this part of the game smile Thank You Bioware!"

-

(from the video comments) coming to Star Wars to get that. It blows my mind.

Meanwhile, I know the Consular is not as good as the Knight in a fight, but is the implication really that a chump with a metal sword can one-shot her? Can you even have 'Jedi' in your name and be that bad?

LOL!

I was irked at that comment when I saw it as well.

There seems to be a very hate or love it outlook that the public holds in regards to the game.

I mean... when I think about people who have waited ages for the big ultimate SW game...

People want to be Jedi, of course. I can understand people wanting to be a Sith, Bounty Hunter or Han Solo-like.

But who the heck ever though to themselves "Oh, I wish I could be a HEALER in Star Wars!"

(brain hurts)

Hmm...

Whilst I like their suggestions for the wider game experience- personal story etc- it looks like the nitty gritty is pretty unoriginal.

I guess it is difficult to do anything that radical, but I am still a little disappointed. The Consular being a... healer, as if Star Wars combat is something that you have Priests in, healing you... gah. It's just reskinned WoW stuff.

(not to mention a vibro blade taking on a lightsabre with no apparent issues- an old KOTOR bugbear).

Not enough to completely put me off, but it's annoying. And any game that charges a monthly fee has to impress me a LOT. I suppose it will come down to how fun the fights feel, despite being not much like the source material.

Agreed. All that has to be said.

Healers, what. And the Consular as a healer?

Not enough to turn me off the game in itself, but... this saddens me.

Of course, if Priest-like Healing is in th game, one has to wonder what poor sod on the Dark Side has to do it.

Fear the merciless wrath of the Sith Inquisitor! Oh yeah, I make people better, too.

I would hope the developers would be in tune with the vibe enough that, if the Sith must have a Healer, they sap life force from enemies instead of procuring health out of nowhere.

Note to self: Avoid that at all costs.

Which would mean that, in not having any form of traditional healer in a game where such a concept does exist, that Dark Side group combat would appear to be more interesting than Light.

Well. Early days.

Poked around the official forums (like most anticipated game forums, quite a depressing place to look around) and the rumour certainly is that the Sith Inquisitor steals life to heal the group.

Which is better, and certainly makes the Dark Side seem more interesting...

... but it's still not right in my view.

And any time you have a dedicated healer class, it;'s almost impossible to get away from that class being overpowered.

This is why rumours of the Monk being dumped in GW2 in favour of all classes having healing options seems a good thing.

What do you mean by "overpowered"? They're going to be really fragile in this game, right?

Overpowered as in without a Healer a party cannot function.

That is what makes the so rare. Developers have to give them a bit more stuff to increase their odds of survival. The question is what. If they're good at something else than healing then it may be possible for them to steal the role of another archetype (for example the tank).

Well indeed, but my point is that there should never be a class that a group HAS to have- it shows an issue with the base game design. And if you have a healing mechanic in your game and one class is better at it than any other, that class becomes disproportionately needed as it becomes inevitable that parties without them fail.

The two solutions are to a. have the base design mean that healing during combat is not part of the game (I REALLY wish someone would do this...) or b. have characters responsible for their own healing rather than dependent on another source.

Again, this is why GW2 is looking better here, right now, as it is trying the latter. It actively forces all players to take a self-heal skill. And as that is a rampant magic setting, it is fine.

In TOR, we seem to have a traditional WoW set-up which is a. not great game design, b. entirely derivative and c. not at all Star Wars.

Sorry misread your post. But you're right. Many games try to make healers optional by adding healing potions and stuff. But they don't want to make the healer useless so they make the potions heal less health. It's a split that doesn't work as people are not ready to spend the exhorbitant amount of money on potions that are needed to defeat one of the real big enemies. Thus the healer is taken into the group.

The way you're saying it it sounds as if GW2 is trying to make every player part healer by giving every class the possibility to learn healing spells. In my opinion however there should still be a healer class since some people just enjoy helping their friends and allies. Maybe one could develop a way of making a healer a real option not just somebody you need if you don't want waste lots of money on healing potions etc. GW2 seems to be walking down the right path and who knows? Maybe they'll be the ones to deliver a good solution.

Well, what I would say to that is that the playstyle that one particular sort of person prefers is less important than the overall creation of a better game. People would adjust. Besides, if you like healing it means you lie a support role. There are other ways to provide support roles.

And you are right- healing potions (something original Guild Wars dumped to good effect) don't help. They are either as good as the healing class, in which case the healing class is pointless, or they are not as good in which case... you still need the healing class. Cock up either way.
