Go to any highly respected music school where they teach blues/rock guitar, or ask a music snob like Eric Clapton, and they'll more or less tell you something similar about some of the names mentioned in this thread.
well if 4 out of 5 people are going copy and past lists, what's the point of having this thread?

One thing I find amusing about these types of threads is that when one person lists someone who noone has thought of before, the next few people tend to list that person too.
Well I'm not seeing Dick Dale, Albert King, Fred Frith, Bill Frisel, Keith Rowe, Glenn Branca, Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore, Andre Segovia, Stephen Malkmus, or anyone else who doesn't conform to rock radio hits post 1980 or uses unorthodox extended techniques.

A fine list if you like prog rock and jazz...Personally I don't. I can appreciate their technical skill though. I do like Rush though so Lifeson is a good pick.
At said highly respected music school you would be instructed by the most talented individual ever to pick up a stringed instrument. That would be Mr. Robin Trower. It is incomprehensible to think this thread made it to page 12 before his name came up. There is no equal.
Honorable mention: Junior Brown, B.B. King, Johnny Clyde Copeland and Albert Collins.
Before you slag off on Junior I suggest you get a studio recording of the song Guit-Steel Blues.
