RIP Our Beloved 96

It's the anniversary of that tragic event back in '89.

Just thought I'd create a thread to share in with the sorrows of that horrible day at Hillsborough.

RIP our 96 brothers.

You'll Never Walk Alone.

Yeah,

Back in 1989 during the FA Cup semi final between Nottingham Forrest and Liverpool playing Sheffield Wednesday's stadium, Hillsborough -

It was going to be a big game, as obvious by the massive turnouts for both sides, however, Liverpool brought this huge amount of supporters, more than the Leppings Lane end (where they were) could hold for capacity. In those times, there were things called Terraces which instead of sitting, fans could stand and literally squish in much like being at a concert. The police sort of just allowed this overly large amount of fans to push themselves into this little end.

Mind you, this game was a huge match and very important to both sides so as I said eariler, the amount of people going was going to be large.

Even during the pre-game before kickoff people were noting the large amounts of people filling into this lane that couldn't support 25,000 and of course as the match heated up, the people in the back pushed the people in front. (it was so tight you couldn't lift your arms). And as a result of the pushing from the back, the people in the front got killed.

It was a horrible incident and actually kind've ended that Terrace era in modern football (note all the stadiums in England now have seats).
It's a real tradegy that these people got killed, they'd done nothing wrong, simply wanted to see a match of football and see their team in the semi-finals. It's a very emotional thing in the Liverpool crowds, they even erected a memorial and everything outside of Anfield (Liverpools home stadium) to remember those lost at Hillsborough.

(stadium holds about 60-70,000)
(they probably sold about 25,000 just for that one end)

Also, instead of just checking the tickets, the mass amount of people still not in the Lepping Lane were trying to get in, so just as the police opened up the gates, Liverpool had scored and viola. Disaster.
RIP.

If you ever see a video on it, you'll notice blue bars on the edge of the terrace, these were called crush bars to try to avoid people being crushed to death - of course this is what killed them. I saw a before and after picture once, and before the bars were straight and normal, afterwards they were bent and broken. That was the kind of force that was being pushed onto those front row. It's sad to watch, you see peoples faces - people who just wanted to see Liverpool play, and you see them die and go under. It's a really sad event, really sad.

Sounds horrible but exactly how did they die? I'm assuming they fell off?

No...they were crushed...either against the barriers or under other people.

It's one the few things I remember where I was when it happened from that age.
