Yeah, go out buy Windows XP and install it.
Or if you are totally cool, get Ubuntu, it's free and good, though it lacks sufficient game support.
If you are bent on running vista though there are a few things you can tweak. Scrapping the Vista look for example, cleaning your start up and shutting down unneeded devices. You could also check for big programs taking up a lot of CPU and for example look for smaller alternatives. For example get Foobar instead of iTunes or VLC instead of Windows Media Player. Use Miranda instead of MSN Messenger and those, and Chrome instead of Firefox. If you have a usb stick you could think about using Portable Apps instead of main drive instaled programs, which should make your computer run more smoothly for the programs you do keep on. Those kinds of things. I got a few links you could check out maybe there is stuff for you amongst it.
To add more to that brilliance above, if you have less than 2 gigs of RAM on Vista, you're asking for a slow system. IMO, it's best to always max out the RAM capabilities on your machine, as it's relatively cheap.
Newegg.com usually has really low prices on RAM and they're shipping is top notch (if in US).
Yep. I just bought a new computer from our local shop and I made them take Vista off of it and put XP on it. Vista is pretty much crapola at the moment.
Vista really isn't that bad, it has a lot of [unnecessary] bells and whistles, which slow down older or lower end machines and it isn't as user friendly as XP in some areas. Granted, I use both and still prefer XP Professional, but Vista isn't pure shit.
Windows 7 is supposed to be a leaned-out version of Vista, basically revamped it and fixed the major shortcomings people had with Vista, so that's a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.
If you just need a machine to surf the web, send email and do papers on, Ubuntu is extremely fast, just takes a little getting used to. Biggest plus, it's free.
Also, we don't have enough information on what the thread starter said to be sure of what the problem is. A snapshot of running processes is probably the best thing to determine wtf is wrong.
