It really depends on your playstyle. If you're a Tactical Captain in a Defiant, you're going to do a lot of damage, but you'll be the equivalent of a glass cannon, and can die very easily. If you pick up the Galaxy Class, you will do less damage, but you'll survive longer in a fire-fight, and you get the bonus of having an extra weapon slot in the rear of your ship. You will die less, but fights will last longer as a result. You could always go science, but you'd only have slightly more survivability in terms of damage you can take, but you can do some nice tricks offensively.
As long as you can fulfill your role, you will succeed in PVE, and even against the Borg. I prefer to play as a TAC in a Cruiser, but on Tribble I've been using a TAC in an Escort, and as long as I didn't charge in first and let the tanks do their job, success was never hard to come by.
Np. I know a lot of people like to cross-specialise too, so don't rule it out. Because you get captain powers AND bridge officer powers, a tactical captain in a cruiser might not be as tanky as an engineer in a cruiser, but he'd last longer than he would in an escort, and would do more damage than an engineer would, etc.

Yeah, i am going to stick with Tactical ships as my choice of ship to pick for free, then i will spend energy stuff for maybe a Galaxy class or bigger ships with greater hull etc. All i need is about 1200 skill points to Captain!
Nice. Just make sure that (if you dont know this already), to go with dual heavy cannons as opposed to dual cannons. They pack more of a punch in terms of dps and alpha damage.
Assuming you're going to use cannons in the defiant, i mean.
I can't wait til we get the new defiant quad cannons.

I do not see, or have not found " Heavy dual cannons"...are they a reward for a mission?
So i picked the Defiant...and bought the Galaxy class. Going to play around with both.
I think the game is great like i have said, though some things i wish were improved. Playing a Federation mission, i had to pilot a Klingon ship, anyway the cut-scenes for the mission were amazing. Showing me at the helm of the Captains chair, the cut-scenes were amazing, though why do they not do that more often and while i am in my own ship?. I guess they cant figure out what ship we are in, but it was done so well i just want more of it. They should fix the hard-points and the size of the phaser beam from the shuttles, it looks ridiculous lol. That is me nit picking, but i gotta say, ground missions and space battles, exploration etc, they really made a game that will not make me feel so repetitive.
What i did not know was that you can repeat missions..and that the rewards scale up to your level!. I was running around with gear from 2 ranks ago.
Come to think of it, i was disappointed that you need to be with a certain number of people to form a fleet. that just seems wrong, it is hard enough for me to get anybody to let me join or invite me in a group, let alone be with up to five and one of us has to go to a fleet officer. Are you a leader of a fleet? or are you in a fleet at all?
You can craft them in memory alpha or buy them on the exchange (and making energy credits is surprisingly easy).
That's the Doomsday Device. Basically that's what we call a "remastered mission". The old version is like a lot of the others, but a while back they started redoing some missions with the new tech to make them better. have you played the one with the vulcan ambassador on p'jem?
lol yeah, the shuttles thing is an issue.
They're even planning to scale up the rewards for those pesky patrol missions, so that from now on any mission you play will scale up with you. im loving this change.
I have a fleet, it's called Federation Reborn. I can invite you if you send me your ingame handle.

AddictionMaster.....is my handle....but i did not download the test version to play on Tribble..i cant afford another 10 gigs of space lol,.
I happen to find Duel Heavy Cannons as loot..so it worked out.
Playing with the Galaxy class ship, makes me really want to make a engineer, i feel like i am missing out since the bonuses would be sick.. However i loved the Akira and of course the defiant so it fits like a glove and i see what you meant about the differences. I do not like any of the Escorts coming up when i advance rank....i hate 4 nacelle ships and i think all 3 versions have them!, so i guess i will have to go with the Sovereign... maybe i am being silly, when i hit maximum rank, i will make an engineer next i think hehe.
what's your account? like, for example, my toon (one of them) is Paul@pr1983.
Nice. With Cannon Rapid-Fire they're pretty sweet.
I actually fly a Sovereign with my main toon, as the extra tactical slot is pretty handy.
Engineers get some awesome powers like Miracle Worker (Massive heal), and you can train Emergency Power to Shields III to your officers, which is the daddy of enemy damage reduction powers.

Not sure actually lol. Toon?...i guess that is the character..
My character is my full name, Joseph F.Ulses my account name is AddictionMaster. I keep naming ships based on characters from a book i have coming out The Mushroom King. I have been joining everything and spreading the word to create buzz. The defiant i am in is called U.S.S Mushroom King..I hope with that info you can figure out how to find me lol
Cannon rapid fire, beam fire at will, high yield torpedo, torpedo spread..tactical team..all the best tactical skills for offense..for engineering i went with power to weapons and reverse polarity...science...science team and scramble senses.
Basically i keep 2 of each division of officers and keep one geared for escort and one for cruiser....so i switch up my officers when i get in galaxy..then with added engineering i go with the norm. When in defiant i go for sheer power..nothing like destroying enemy after enemy on the first pass, and with its maneuverability i do great in missions...it is only the Borg and such where you have to be smart and know your role, its funny how it can be destroyed in a split second, glass cannon indeed, but i love it so much lol.
I don't plan on making a science officer until my third character, but i am intrigued by all the abilities they have also.

I made Rear Admiral, Lower Half (God i hate that name, seeing it in dialog makes my stomach turn lol) I was happy to find they make a escort mixed with a cruiser...so that's what i picked. I think I am.... [email protected] that helps.
I am still enjoying the game immensely, i could nitpick thing more as i play. However I am still thrilled at certain points. Starting to get a better understanding of the powers and abilities also.
powers looks good, though you should have "emergency power to shields" for damage negation if you don't already, imo. science team is one of the handiest powers in the game; it clears so many debuffs, and is the #1 power against the breen imo, as it counters their Subnucleonic Beam.
If you did the Doomsday mission, did you not get the Har'Peng torpedo? If you have it, it doesn't work with High Yield, so you don't need that power (and the torpedo is plenty powerful without it anyway).
For the Borg, don't concentrate on shield powers, as the Borg are cheap f*cks who will drain them anyway. The main powers for the Borg are Hazard Emitters (hull heal), Polarise Hull (Hull resistance), and Tactical Team (clears assimilate ship power). Maybe an Auxiliary to SIF too. At least that's what I use.

Yes i use emergency power to shields, i switch my engineers every so often to test new things, though i am a traditionalist and do not mix weapons systems, to me it is not star trek if i am using other species weapons. It is funny i can not bring myself to use anything other than what a federation ship would use. For some reason even though i know something is more powerful i wont use it lol. I do great on every type of mission, it is only the borg events i have a problem with, however after taking your advice and playing to my strengths, i let the tanks go in first and support them as i come in behind them. I do much better now to be honest, so the advice was a wake up call, i went and read every manual, tips etc, so i can understand how all the skills and powers work and effect each other. I have not been p0laying long as my post can show, i was just having so much fun, even when getting destroyed.
I'm glad you're enjoying it. When you see the kind of changes coming to Holodeck I'm sure you'll love them too, particularly the events and the Duty Officer system.

Getting close to Vice Admiral, now i see i want the retrofit Defiant. What is the best way to earn marks of exploration?...i have only noticed 1 mission for -Charting an area, which gets you 5 marks...will more open up, or am i missing something?
That's literally the only way in the game to get them directly. I "think" if you get Marks of Honor, you can convert those to Marks of Exploration too. Emblems too, though it has been a while since i did such a thing.
