Amazing game is amazing, it's truly a Metroid game.
Saying a Metroid game is inferior because it's short is like saying a Legend of Zelda game sucks because Link is in it. Personally going back to the roots of the Metroid series this game is very very fun for me. I of course plan on playing it 10 times after I finish it which is what I've done with all the Metroid games. How fast can I get through with 100%? How fast can I get through with minimum percents? I loved the Prime series but I'm gonna have to say that this game is on par with or better than any of the Prime series games. Really for a entry into the Metroid series 10 hours is ridiculously long.
All of you should take the time to read the Metroid official manga which all of the backstory of this game is based on.
You cannot take the fact that a Metroid game is short as some sort of positive- that is simply a ludicrous stance. A game being short is a legitimate point of criticism- and a Metroid game does not have to be short, nor is being short any sort of prerequisite for a speed run.
Denying that is simply blind fanboyism at work.
The comparison to Link being In Zelda is pretty silly too.

The game being short is something you expect of a the series. If I hated QTE's I would never play a God of War game. If you want a really long game, don't play Metroid series.
While I suppose it doesn't HAVE to be short that's been a design choice from the very beginning and up till now Metroid series is still with it. The Prime series games are all about 20 hours or less anyway, so it's not like they are that much different. It's Metroid, expect it.
I'm pretty much biased though anyway, I really like the Metroid style much better than the Prime style. I really liked the Prime games but the older style is more fun, fitting and demonstrates Samus' abilities much better.
It;s not necessarily something to expect of the series at all. And if a series has a shortcoming, then it continues to be a shortcoming if it is not dealt with and hence, again, is a legitimate criticism.
I don't know how else I can put it- a game being short is a BAD thing. That is why it is getting such criticism.
You can like whatever you like, of course, but you have no grounds attacking others for criticising something that is legitimate to criticise. And trying to use "It's a Metroid game" as en excuse is meaningless.
Meanwhile, if people thought it was short AND gave an equivalent game experience to, say, the Super Metroid days, then it would be getting higher marks. But the vibe is that it is dumbed down and laboured with idiocies like the pouting, ansgsty personality of Aran and the ridiculous method of item restriction.
(The regenerating missiles is getting flak too).
And we all know that history will not judge it as good as Prime. And that's fine, because you cannot hit the gold mine every time, they were trying something new and most reviewers still enjoyed the game. You just shouldn't hide from it, is all.

Depends on the game really, Portal was very short, most people loved it. Myself included.
Simple controls and hand holding throughout your travel is certainly a dumbing down compared to before but it's not like the controls were all that complicated to begin with, and they have been hand holding since the release of Fusion and Zero Mission. While it does take a bit away from exploration I tend to do my own thing regardless within the game.
Samus is far from pouty or angsty in the game. She's never whines in the game at all. She recalls the very recent happenings of Super Metroid, in which the last Metroid(which she apparently cared for) was killed and the planet she grew up on was blown to dust. While I'm not that far along I'm sure there's a part where they'll show how she watched as her family and everyone she knew was slaughtered by the space pirates right in front of her. Having just a bit of insecurity after that is understandable.
Personally I don't think they have anything to "hide", it's just as good as Prime was when it was released, it's just different.
I've only read the IGN and Destructoid review and NONE of them mention the game as being short.
the shortcomings lie elsewhere, not in its lenght.
Portal is short, everyone loves it, MW2 campaing is like shortest game ever, yet many loved the campaing and the absurd controversy over it (notice I'm not mentioning multiplayer or it's financial success)
what's up with the sheep mentality?
play the damn game before jumping in the bandwagon

Main thing that bothered me from it has been the few parts where you stand still and they force you to find something in the environment to trigger a cutscene or something.
As much as I complain about short games, it's definitely not always a bad thing. I mean, after all, Prince of Persia has always been a series made up of short, quick games. Sometimes stretching out the length of a game will just ruin it.
I've played for about 6 hours now and Samus' whiny, dependent personality from the reviews was incredibly exaggerated. She also spends the majority of her time alone, and even has reason to avoid the Federation soldiers now.
Her tone isn't emotional, just introspective. It's a Japanese storytelling; she's just thinking very deeply about the events and their possible meanings and implications.
This is Metroid. It feels very similar to Fusion and Zero Mission, and even to some extent Super Metroid at times. The arguments against it being linear are preposterous, as the series has always given you a clear path based on the abilities you have, with some extra rooms holding items if you're clever, and the ability to backtrack if you decide to go after an item you now can access.
Other M is not Prime, but it doesn't need to be. It's a very solid entry in the series, and I say this as someone initially worried about it but open-minded.

I just want to say that I always thought the relative shortness of Metroid games was for their general replayability. I know I can beat Zero Mission or Fusion maybe two or three times on a long trip, and nearly everytime I'll find some new way to get an item, since I already know where it is (though less so in Fusion.) I also tend to replay the Prime games, and the Trilogy was quite convenient in that respect. The goal is typically a fast completion time, so you're expected to play through the game a few times to find everything.
Just my take. As for Other M, I'm enjoying it immensly so far, and I think I'm about halfway through, just after Sector Zero. And I'll say that "little birdie" is about the funniest thing I've ever seen in Metroid, considering.
