Nah.

She was looking for food. That's it.

When a mother bear (sow) is protecting her cubs from, say, a male bear, she makes loud noises with her voice, stands up, moves about in an abrupt and hurried fashion to indicate irritation and displeasure, but does NOT charge out of the blue. She tries to keep herself between the would be predator and the cubs, making sure that at any point, the pred. has to go through her to reach her cubs.

Gnawing on his skull is definitely not what a protective mother bear is doing to protect her young...she's looking for food, dude...probably for herself and cubs.

Edit- Also, after reading his story again, he covered the back of his neck, like you're supposed to do if attacked. It would seem that he had a great deal of knowledge about bears, knowing that their noses are sensitive as well. I'm quite certain he assessed the situation as an attack. Now, as far as killing the bear, it would probably have been the best thing to do. Some bears become "man killers" after attacking and eating some of a person and they start to attack, for food, man a lot more. These types of bears have to be killed anyway. And the man didn't kill the cubs; direclty or indirectly.

"Ahhh...poor bears...poor cubs...blah blah blah." Poor man. Way to go, buddy, for saving your life against an animal much more equipped to kill you.

On second thought, she really could have been defending her cubs. But this is not normal as it sounds like the man was on a typical trail. Mothers would only attack in their territory...She wouldn't be outside her territory with cubs..unless....

This is why I doubt the "defense" idea. She was most likely hunting.

not counting VERY lucky strikes at its eyes. NO1 can win against a bear. their bones and muscles are too dense and large for even the most expereinced people to do any damage against em. and even casual slaps can send a person flying due to the huge mass they can literally tear your body in two across your spine by pouncing on you.

ur odds wud be better with a spear.

Just like these idiots who get shark attacked and say "WHY OMG WHY?" You are in the sharks house, dumbass. What would you do if you had a gun and found a burglar in your house? Stay outta the ocean.

To be fair, sharks don't actually like...own the ocean.

They're just douchebags.
