Of course... man, I can remember those days. We all thought these games were the bomb... and they still are actually.
I'm surprised how much my kids are in love with all the new Super Mario games that come out. Essentially they haven't changed very much over the years.
Yeah the playability was king.
When 2D was all and all graphics lovingly hand drawn.. when music guys had to economise with only 4 sometimes 2 or 3 channel sound (including spot fx) to coax their masterpieces from...
Ghouls N Ghosts was another series that stuck to "If it aint broke" logic too.

I never actually got to play it.. will have to look out for a cheap copy..
PSP Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins was a worthy addition too...
'crazy bastard level' difficulty modes in it too...as one might expect from that series.
I have the Ghosts N Goblins, Ghouls N Ghosts and Super Ghouls N Ghosts arcade games on a capcom classics compilation too... Portable grooviness in abundance.
Yeah it made you go back for that hidden crazy weapon you need to kill the demon finally. Does that in all the games. Brutal!
Capcom were bang on it back then.
Strider
Forgotten worlds
Final Fight
Streetfighter II
Bionic Commando
Side Arms
Black Tiger
The GNGs (obviously)
Captain Commando
Just a few of my other favorites from 'em.
