Mrs. Danvers? Awww, man. "Rebecca" is the already-dead wife of Maximilian [played by Lawrence Olivier], and then Maxim goes out on holiday and meets a companion to a rich old lady [hired companion], then whirlwind romance ensues and he marries the young woman.
So Mrs. Danvers is the Housekeeper of Manderly, the huge but very gothic manor that Maxim and Rebecca lived in. She was absolutely unhealthily creepily obsessed with Rebecca, and she gets very... well, let's say upset to find a new mistress at Manderly. At first the new wife is very nervous so the Danvers is okay with this, but then Maxim encourages his 2nd wife to branch out, and she starts to settle in to Manderly, even going so far as taking Rebecca's rooms.
Danvers is upset. She sabotages dear wifey's attempts to impress Maxim's friends [which are of a much higher class]. Danvers gets crazier and crazier, trying to harm wifey as she sleeps in Rebecca's bed, uses Rebecca's silver backed brushes and mirrors.
But then TWIST because Maxim actually hated Rebecca and killed her. But they get through the trial and are acquitted, and so go back home to Manderly. by this time, Danvers has heard the news and while the couple are celebrating she starts the house on fire. Our protagonists escape after some escaping of lowered beams in inconvenient places, and stand outside, watching Manderly burn down. Close up to Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca's burning room, holding Rebecca's belongings close to her chest, lying down on Rebecca's bed in ecstasy.
"Tonight, I dreamed I came to Manderly again..." Alfred Hitchcock directs. Watch it.
