Max Rockatansky, AKA Mad Max, AKA the Road Warrior.....

MAD MAX
(please log in to view the image)
Max Rockatansky is a member of the MFP in Australia, in a dystopian future where law and order has begun to break down, Max battles a motorcycle gang – led by the barbaric "Toecutter". They are running roughshod over a country town, vandalizing property, stealing fuel and terrorising the local population. Max and his fellow officer Jim "The Goose" are able to arrest the Toecutter's young protege, Johnny the Boy, when Johnny lingers at the scene of one of the gang’s crimes, the rape of a young couple. However, when no witnesses show for his trial, the courts declare the case "no contest" and Johnny is released. The MFP Captain Fifi Macaffee frees his officers to pursue the gangs as they want, "so long as the paperwork's clean."
Shortly thereafter, Goose is attacked by Toecutter.
The Goose survives, but after seeing his charred body in the hospital's burn ward, Max becomes angry and disillusioned with the police force. Worried of what may happen if he stays in the job, and fearing he may become as savage and brutal as the gang members, Max announces to Fifi that he is resigning from the MFP with no intention of returning. Fifi convinces him to take a holiday first before making his final decision about leaving.
While on holiday at the coast, Max's wife, Jessie, and their son run into Toecutter's gang, who attempt to molest her. She flees, but the gang later manages to track them to the remote farm near the beach where she and Max are staying. While attempting to escape, Jessie and her son are run down and run over by the gang; their crushed bodies are left in the middle of the road. Max arrives too late to intervene.
Filled with rage, Max dons his police leathers and takes a supercharged black Pursuit Special to pursue the gang. After torturing a mechanic for information on the gang, Max methodically hunts down and kills the gang members. When Max finds Johnny the Boy taking the boots off a dead driver at the scene of a crash, he handcuffs Johnny's ankle to the wrecked vehicle and sets a crude time-delay fuse. Throwing Johnny a hacksaw, Max leaves him the choice of sawing through either the hi-tensile steel of the handcuffs (which will take 10 minutes) or his ankle (which will take 5 minutes). As Max drives away, the vehicle explodes; an emotionless Max drives on further into the Outback without turning back. He becomes "The Road Warrior"....

The V8 Interceptor, his incredibly cool car: (please log in to view the image)

In "The Road Warrior", Max and his dog are in a car chase, two cars and a motorbike pursuing Max's V8 Interceptor. Max deploys his booster and outruns his pursuers, wrecking the two cars. The motorbike-riders pull up as Max is collecting fuel from the wreckage of a truck, and the bike's driver, Wez, pulls an arrow from his own arm, screaming defiance at Max. Searching the wrecked truck, Max finds the body of a dead child, and picks up the child's musical box, then he drives off.
Max spots a gyrocopter by the side of the road. He approaches cautiously, but when he catches the snake guarding the 'copter, an improbable apparition bursts from the ground, aiming a crossbow at him. The Gyro Captain has been using the 'copter to attract the curious, and get their fuel once the snake has done its work. Max warns him the Interceptor is booby-trapped, and when Max's dog attacks the Gyro Captain, tables are turned. To save his own skin, the Gyro Captain offers to show Max an oil-refinery not far away.
Max, the dog and the Gyro Captain settle in for the night. The next day, Watching through binoculars, Max and the Gyro Captain see a group of cars speeding from the compound. The cars are quickly overtaken. one is a woman, who is raped and then killed. Max arrives at the scene after all except the rapist have left. He disposes of the rapist, and releases the badly wounded male victim, Nathan, who offers Max as much gas as he likes if he only takes him back to the compound.
Pulling up outside the compound, Max gets out and enters the compound at gunpoint. Pappagallo interrogates Max about the fate of the other cars. Max can tell him nothing, and points out he just wants his gas, as Nathan promised. But Nathan dies and Papagallo informs Max that whatever arrangement he had, it died with Nathan. Just then, Humungus's gang approaches, and the gate to the compound is closed, forcing the refinery people to let Max stay inside, cuffed to a pipe.
Humungus tells the refinery-people he intercepted all their cars, and has learned from the captives that they were sent out to find a rig big enough to haul the fuel-filled tanker from the compound. He offers the refinery-people to walk away free, if they leave the refinery and all the fuel to him and his gang. He gives them one day to decide.
Max offers to deliver a truck to haul the tanker, in return for his car and all the fuel he can carry. The deal is accepted.
In the dead of night, Max and the dog set off on foot, Max carrying fuel in jerry cans. In the morning, Max arrives at the hill where he left the Gyro Captain shackled to a log, only to find that that resourceful gentleman has set off across the wasteland, dragging the log. Max follows his trail and catches up with him. They arrive at the gyrocopter and Max, dog and Gyro Captain fly to the truck where Max found the musical box. Max gets the truck started and throws the Gyro Captain the keys to the shackles, then drives off with his dog. The Gyro Captain calls "Were partners!" after them.
The gyrocopter follows in Max's wake as he heads off to break through the siege. Max takes Humungus's gang by surprise, and - aided by the Gyro Captain who drops snakes on the pursuers - makes it into the compound, although the truck suffers substantial damage. Humungus's crowd are in hot pursuit, and Wez gets inside the compound by climbing onboard the truck. The gang now attacks the gate to get inside. In the confusion, no-one except Max notices that Pappagallo is wounded while defending the gate. Max runs to take his place, preventing the enemy from breaching the gate. The compound people now greet Max as a friend and hero, wanting him to drive the truck for the escape run. Max just wants to get his fuel and go.
Max is fuelling up and getting ready to leave. Pappagallo tries to persuade him to drive the truck. Max refuses, and Pappagallo in his disappointment confronts him, calling him a coward, no better than the garbage outside, before leaving him to get on with his preparations. Max finds the Feral Kid has installed himself in the Interceptor, obviously expecting to tag along. Max evicts him without ceremony. As Max pulls out of the compound at daybreak, The Gyro Captain tells Max hes making a big mistake.
Humungus's gang sees Max driving away, and Wez - disobedient to his leader's will - sets off in pursuit with some companions. Max is overtaken by Wez, who throws a length of pipe at Maxs windshield, and the Interceptor crashes off the road. Injured, Max barely has time to crawl out of the wreck with his dog and hide behind a rock, before Wez's companions scramble down to the wreck. Wez wants Max alive, but as the dog is killed trying to protect Max. Max is saved from capture when the booby-trapped tank of the Interceptor explodes, killing Wez's men when they try to get at the fuel. Wez pulls away, leaving Max for dead. At the compound, the Gyro Captain sees the smoke from the explosion, and fetches a semi-conscious Max back to the compound on the 'copter.

Max comes to in the sick-bay to find the Feral Kid bringing him his stuff. Outside, Pappagallo is going over the escape plan with his people. The tanker, driven by Pappagallo, is to leave first, to draw off the attackers, allowing the rest of the people to escape in another direction in the school bus and other vehicles, to rendezvous with the tanker at nightfall. Max convinces them to let him drive the truck, pointing out that - despite his injuries - he's the best chance they've got.

They set off, Max driving the now reinforced truck, pulling the tanker which is guarded by the Warrior-Woman, the Mechanic and another warrior. At the last minute, the Feral Kid jumps on the truck. The tanker smashes through Humungus's lines and heads off with Pappagallo in an escort vehicle, and the Gyro Captain providing aerial support. The school-bus and the other vehicles quietly leave the compound without attracting interest, just as Pappagallo had predicted. Some of Humungus's people then enter the abandoned compound to take possession, but the compound has been rigged with explosives, and blows up only minutes afterwards.

Humungus has been keeping Wez chained after his disobedience, but now sets him free. They all chase after the tanker, and one by one pick off the warriors defending it, Wez killing the Warrior Woman, and Humungus killing Pappagallo. Things are looking bad for Max, as the gang starts shooting out the tires. The Gyro Captain creates a diversion, dropping Molotov-cocktails from above. The 'copter is damaged and goes down, but Humungus has to stop to put out the fire in his vehicle before he can join the pursuit again.

Now there's only Max and the Feral Kid left to battle Wez and another gang-member. After a spectacular head on collison claims the lives of Wez and Humungus, it is revealed that the tanker was full of dirt, not gas. The Gyro Captain comes along, driving his copter on the road. Max and the Captain exchange wry smiles, Max shaking his head tiredly.

The narrator is revealed as the Feral Kid grown to manhood, and the Road Warrior is seen standing alone by the side of the road - "the last we ever saw of him."

Why is it whenever I look at a Mad Max flick, I always think about the South Park episode 'The Passion of the Jew?'

Or, rather, Mel Gibson in Braveheart facepaint driving the tanker screaming "Q'APLA! Q'APLA!"

But Max is worthy of mad respect.
