Linux

This thread is specifically for those familiar or new to the Linux distributions.

Feel free to share opinions, ask questions, and say anything about Linux.

Well, a month ago I downloaded and tried Ubuntu in Virtualbox under Windows XP SP3.
I found it surprising that this OS is just as user-friendly as Windows XP. In fact, now I find it more appealing than Windows XP.. though it isn't as visually attractive as Win 7.

After using it, I tried other Linux distros, like openSUSE, Fedora, Mandriva, Zorin...
Zorin OS is a perfect Linux alternative for Windows 7.
I like the way it mimics the GUI sans the Aero visual effects.
I definitely recommend it to Windows users who are new to Linux.

Now I'm going to give OpenSolaris and PC-BSD a shot thumb up

Re: Linux

Tried many; always end up going back to Ubuntu. I'll test out Zorin, that one's new to me.

This is a decent site for Linux distributions: http://distrowatch.com/

Red Hat isn't free, they do release a free desktop version called Fedora (version 15 out now) which is (or was) comparable to Ubuntu.

I test things out in Fedora, every now and then. Decent and stable.

I tried to get a Arch Linux distro working, failed, and then ran back to Linux Mint like a wimp. Been using Ubuntu since 2009, but switched over to Linux Mint a few months ago.

If you want/need to use a lightweight Linux distro and you like the ones that are based off Ubuntu/Debian, try Lubuntu. It has a small(er) resource footprint and you can add what you need to it later on.
