Figures this would turn mostly into a continuity argument.

In the trailers they used actual footage from the earlier movies. Hugh Jackman is in it. Clearly it's not a reboot. And just as clearly, we're not supposed to pore over the minutia that are the continuity errors between the films. Seriously, just don't think too hard about it and it's ok.

Didn't mind the movie. I thought the guy playing Xavier was pleasantly charismatic. I could take or leave the plot, character choices, etc. Shaw was an excellent villain, didn't think they used enough of him absorbing the nuclear reactor. Good music, may purchase the soundtrack.

Mathew Vaughn had told Slashfilm how he views his movie:

"My main goal was to make as good a film that could stand on its own two feet regardless of all the other films.

However I thought anything that worked in all the other movies, and I could have some fun with nodding towards, I would. But my main rule was, 'You know what, we're trying to reboot and start a whole new X-Men franchise' and therefore, making a film work on its own two feet was far more important than trying to be reverential to the prior movies."

Make what you want of this. But it sounds like a prequel/reboot to me. Kind of like the new Star Trek movie. Except without the time hole changing history thing. Sequel idea- Bishop has effected the time line!

He was fine. Didn't stand out to me particularly. Kevin Bacon and the guy who played Xavier were the stars to me.

Finally saw it last night and enjoyed it. Really good movie. The Wolverine cameo was priceless. If I had any gripes at all it would be that I thought the Beasts blue form makeup was a tad cheesy. Grammer looked better in X3. Xavier telling the soldiers that they were on their own due to Emma being on the other boat. Chuck should be able to handle Emma. Last but not least, a brass bed cracking Emma's diamond form? Really? These are all minor. Excellent comic movie.

Sounds like he's using reboot to denote a new series of movies based on their younger selves, not an official retcon to the earlier films. If that were actually the direction, he would've avoided all references. He just didn't care if continuity was perfect. Context is usually more important than textbook definitions in such cases, as most people don't worry about the uber-hardcore internet forum fans when throwing out soundbites in interviews.

^ Yeah that sounds about right. Its a reboot only in the sense of it being a new series of movies.

I always said if it were a total reboot they would of course have had Cyclops as part of the original team, but could not due to this being a prequel where Cyclops would not even be born yet.

And then of course theres the trailer with clips from X1.

But from his statement, your right, he's just saying he's more bothered about making a Good movie than having the continutiy perfect. And he's right there as I think we'd all prefer good movies to good continuity Lol

Just saw it yesterday. Now I have to see the others again because I think this latest entry may be the best of the franchise. Good character development (especially with Magneto and Mystique), and the best large-scale/military battle scenes since the Hulk tossed tanks.

I was never an X-man fan, but as far as their movies go, they have been consistently the best.

It doesn't help the bottom line, these movies getting the profits they need to keep going with a series, to give out info for free downloads.

The one area where I thought the movie ****ed up, and not even in a movie-related sense but in a financial sense, was a lack of recognizable characters. Specifically, Azazel, Angel Salvadore, and Darwin. Even Riptide was pushing it a little but at least he's been in the comics forever. Most people know the X-Men either from the cartoons, the original movies, the video games, or the comics from the late 70's through the 90's. These are all new, obscure characters. Azazel has been in something like, 14 issues. There were many other characters they could have used that would be more recognizable, hence the movie doing better at the box office (again, this is all financial/marketing criticism, the movie was awesome). Dazzler and Sunfire or Thunderbird could have filled the Angel and Darwin roles and Azazel could've been replaced with Avalanche, Blockbuster, Locus, Astra, Harpoon, etc.

Angel Salvadore I didn't really mind, but Azazel just seemed like a red bastard version of Nightcrawler if you ask me.
