If Snape needs time for his Smoke form to move away, then he's screwed. Sidious can use his telekinesis to grab the smoke (almost, but not quite as heavy as several Senate pods at once) and do with him as pleases *wink wink*.

Harry casts sectumsempra. Snape turns and blocks it, and returns a spell of his own. It hits Harry. This all happened in less than a second. AND the spells were damn near instant in their travel time.
