I had a Cable-like force character that I really liked. Then I converted him into a melee guy who was alright, but not as cool. I think he was more funny but not as effective in combat.

The free ones are the ones I left in the quote. You can test them all out in the area where you pick them before you make your final choice.
In addition, if you want to later on undo your choices (any powers) you can undo the last one you did and then keep on going down the list in that order. Those will cost some (in game money, not real money).
I had been using flight for the past few days, but since I hadn't upgraded my stats when I leveled, I decided to first change my travel power to teleportation. I'm so glad I did. It's a little annoying to constantly have to activate it, but it is faster than flight and extremely useful in combat - to get around or escape - since it is the only travel power that is based on duration and not hampered by a slower combat speed.
In addition, you get two other traveling powers later in the game. If you become a Science focused character you can get Storm Rider (Flying with electrical aura), if you are Arms you get the (R.A.D. Roll? You roll on the ground), and if you are Mystic you get another flight power. You can do those when you reach the 310 rank in that focus.
And you can pick another travel power at level 35. So if you dont want just different variations of flight, you might want to customize your starting travel power to adjust for that. Just my two cents.
Also the other travel powers can be unlocked with your account for less then 5 dollars each. For those of you that don't mind microtransactions that is
Would have been nice if you answered the question. Think the answer is two, you could defintely make a Punisher type character anyway. Meh I only tend to go on about him because hes underated, I like alot of other characters y'know.

you can make a punisher type, yes. if you're talking about how many varieties of powers you can choose from, there's a few dozen to start. if you mean actual physical powers, then two. but as you level up you get more. im at level 9 and i already have four offemsive powers and a travel power.
This is like City of Heroes, but much better. The graphics, character creation and powers are far more diverse, though I still think they should have far more powers for a game like this.
I played for about a year, stopped around mid Dec 2010. Still have time on my account (i think). I have several characters varying in range, highest is a 35. Never hit 40, as I get board with a char at around lvl 30.
With the free-to-play you're limited in making your char, believe you pick from templates instead of doing whatever you like, still probably be fun though.
