The Macabre Man-Thing

Man-Thing is a character made entirely of swamp muck. It was Ted Sallis' destiny to find his way back to the Nexus of all Realities, to become its guardian. As the Man-Thing, he has little intelligence, or rather, a different type of intelligence, such that understands emotions, and reacts to fear and anger. When something if fearful, the Man-Thing will lash out at it, its touch burning the his victim.

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-Thing

Comic Vine: http://www.comicvine.com/man-thing/29-4988/

Here is the original origin story for the Man-Thing [Savage Tales v1 1]:

From Sallis' own journal, the serum was a reproduction of the Super Soldier Serum [Marvel Comics Presents v1 164]:

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9500/mcp16404.jpg

I really like this origin. They do build upon it in later iterations, making Sallis seem increasingly devoted in his work, to the point that he ignored and lashed out at his wife, which does seem to fit the fact that he was both driven by his scientific curiosity and personal financial gain but also tortured by the fact that his creation would be used to kill people. In fact, it is easy to read Sallis' transformation into a physical monster as a result of the Super Soldier Serum as symbolic of his mental and spiritual transformation while trying to recreate it. This idea of some sort of “sin” being the basis for Sallis' transformation is touched upon throughout Man-Thing's publication history, such as here where we see Hulk musing about what Sallis might have done to deserve his fate [Incredible Hulk 389]:

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/...lehulk38922.jpg

But never in an overbearing or theological manner, more as a “predestination” or often even simply a “you-reap-what-you-sow” type narrative. Even at his creation, then, before the definitive work by Steve Gerber, Man-Thing challenged not only real world social issues [for instance, the role of scientists in a time of war, which is very relevant today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-11860928] but even issues as they would have existed in the Marvel Universe. What is the real difference between Captain America and a cruise missile?

When Gerber started writing the character, he continued this slanted look at the more socio-political issues. Bare with me, I'm going to show an example. I'll try not to say too much, but in terms of why I think Man-Thing is an important character in the MU, it is the perspective that he allows writers to use when dealing with human problems, and just the more psychological nature of the character itself allows for more introspective storylines that don't need to have conclusive or clearly good or bad endings.

Racism [Adventure into Fear 12]:

http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/...tofear01211.jpg
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/35...tofear01212.jpg
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3077...tofear01213.jpg
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/...tofear01214.jpg
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/...tofear01215.jpg
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/...tofear01216.jpg

I think it speaks for itself, but most importantly, the “blank slate” cognition that Man-Thing has allows him to be used as a powerful vehicle of communicating human emotions, the type of stuff that goes deeper than the words we use. We see how hatred creates a cycle of spiralling violence and oppression that ends only when everyone is, well, dead. The oppressed killed by the oppressor, the the oppressor consumed by their own fears and emotions, the evil of the deeds they have to continuously do in order to oppress. I think, as a reader, this is an interesting perspective to be given. While the inherent evil of something like racism does evoke an emotional reaction from us, this puts a new perspective on the issue, and at least forces us to reconsider our position. Ultimately Gerber does enforce how disgusting racism is, but this piece does at least force of to see how reciprocal racial violence becomes, and its futility, by phrasing it in terms of human emotion rather than ideas of rights, liberties or the law.

Onto Man-Thing's physicality.

Strength:

Man-Thing breaks through the metal walls of a base [Midnight Sons Unlimited 8]:

http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/...unlimited08.jpg

Breaks through the walls of an underground bunker [Astonishing Tales v1 13]:

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/...alesv101319.jpg

Here he uproots a large tree [Man-Thing v1 9]:

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/...nthing00909.jpg

Rips the tongues out of some monsters [Thunderbolts 147]:

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/...bolts147006.jpg
http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/...bolts147007.jpg

Or a person right in half [Tomb of Terror 1]:

http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/7220/tot01pg009.png

Probably his highest end strength feat, holding a jeep in place as it tries to drive away, then swatting it with one hand as it reverses at him [Man-Thing v2 6]:

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/...hingv200609.jpg
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/69...hingv200610.jpg

These easily put Man-Thing in the 3-5 tonne range.

Durability

First, Man-Thing can't die:

[Adventure into Fear 11]:

http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/4631/fear1111.jpg

[Daredevil 114]:

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/...edevil11417.jpg

Next, his general durability to being physically harmed:

Here we see Man-Thing survive a 7 story fall, while protecting an infant [Giant Sized Man-Thing 5]:

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1692/manthing13.jpg

Here he survives a battering ram [Man-Thing v1 7]:

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/...nthing00718.jpg

Being hit by a car:

Not even knocked backward by the force [Man-Thing v1 4]:

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/...hing0041011.jpg
http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/...nthing00412.jpg

Again, not even knocked over [Iron Man Annual 3]:

http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/918/ann00327.jpg

[Nomad v2 21]:

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/...g18lochryan.jpg

Survives an avalanche [Man-Thing v2 3]:

http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/...hingv200302.jpg
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/...hingv200303.jpg

Destroys a trap designed specifically to take him down [Man-Thing v1 2]:

http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/...nthing00220.jpg
http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/...nthing00221.jpg

Resists magic attacks from a Gorgon [Man-Thing v1 10]:

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/...nthing01120.jpg

Fights a powerful super-zombie while in a torrential downpour of a rain that consumes organic matter. Man-Thing had been in this rain for an extended period even before fighting [Marvel Zombies 4 3]:

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/5315/page018c.jpg
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/5759/page019.jpg
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/6606/page020m.jpg

Here he takes an all out bombardment from a group of mercenaries trained specifically to attack him [Giant Sized Man-Thing 5]:

http://img26.imageshack.us/i/manthing28.jpg/
http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/7556/manthing29.jpg

http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/1126/manthing33.jpg

Traditionally, both dehydration and fire have been the best ways to take down Man-Thing, however, he has a very high resistance to these things as well:

Dehydration:

Fights well against a machine designed specifically for the purpose of dehydrating him [Giant Sized Man-Thing 2]

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/7412/manthing18.jpg

Fire:

Shot by a flare gun [Incredible Hulk 389]:

http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/...lehulk38910.jpg

Or with white phosphorous [Man-Thing v2 5]:

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/5056/manthing00513.jpg

Shrugs off Hellfire attack from Ghost Rider [Marvel Premiere v1 28]:

Survives reentry through the Earth's atmosphere [Man-Thing v1 14]:

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/...anthing1403.jpg

Survives a large brawl while being on fire. Even after the fight is over, he has the strength to make it back into the water [Man-Thing v2 10]:

A large component of Man-Thing's durability come from his ooze like composition and regeneration:

Ooze

To begin, I want to show an editor's note here. Spider-Man had just done a two-foot kick into Man-Thing, and the editor (and rightly so, might I add) clearly points out that Spidey should have gone right into Man-Thing, rather than hitting him [Giant Sized Spider-Man 5]:

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/...iderman0535.jpg

Man-Thing's body is such that blades, axes and swords just pass right through it:

[Adventure into Fear 19]:

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4821/fear1916.jpg

[Man-Thing v1 3]:

http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/8/manthing00303.jpg

Notice here that the net simply oozes out of Man-Thing also [Incredible Hulk 198]:

http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/...nchulk19813.jpg

Bullets also pass harmlessly through him:

[Man-Thing v1 7]:

http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/...nthing00716.jpg

[Web of Spider-Man Annual 4]:

http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/...anannual043.jpg

Even close range shotgun has no real effect [Nomad 21]:

http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/...g19lochryan.jpg

Here a cannon ball, fired from very close range, harmlessly is absorbed by Man-Thing's ooze [Man-Thing v2 8]:

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/...hingv200817.jpg

As mentioned before, he oozes through nets:

[Man-Thing v1 7]:

http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/...nthing00708.jpg

Or Spider-Man's adhesive webbing [Marvel Team-Up v2 4]:

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/15...v204spiderm.jpg

Here, even after days of exposure to sub-zero temperatures on a mountain, he is able to ooze through a cage [Man-Thing v2 3]:

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/...hingv200315.jpg
http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/...hingv200316.jpg

The ooze makes him very difficult to harm during a fight, such as we see here against:

She-Hulk [She-Hulk v1 8]:

http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/231/shehulk00813.jpg
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/...hehulk00814.jpg

Bug [Micronauts v1 7]:

http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/...sspecialedi.jpg

Thing [Marvel Two-in-One v1 1]:

http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/...oinone00117.jpg

Iron Man [Iron Man Annual 3]:

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/3722/ann00328.jpg
http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/239/ann00329.jpg

Shang-Chi [Master of Kung Fu 19]:

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/61...kungfu01907.jpg

He can also use his ooze offensively:

Using his muck to choke out the Hulk [Incredible Hulk 197]:

http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/173/hulk19717.jpg

Forming in the shape of an alligator to trap someone [Man-Thing v4 3]:

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/8264/manthing318.jpg
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/4969/manthing319.jpg

Or oozing over people, essentially to consume them. Notice he also oozes through the windshield of the truck to attack the driver [Blaze 2]:

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/9987/blaze0217.jpg
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/367/blaze0218.jpg
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1729/blaze0219.jpg

Regeneration

Man-Thing shows instantaneous regeneration from gun-wounds:

[Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth 6]:

http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/...egioncps024.jpg
http://img576.imageshack.us/img576/...egioncps026.jpg

[Man-Thing v3 1]:

http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/...nthingv3115.jpg

[Man-Thing v2 9]:

http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/...hingv200913.jpg
http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/...hingv200914.jpg

Regenerates from being destroyed by a car [Man-Thing v3 1]:

http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/...nthingv3106.jpg

Buried by a bulldozer [Adventure into Fear 16]:

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/...tofear01616.jpg
http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/...tofear01617.jpg
http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/...tofear01618.jpg

Exploded by multiple sticks of dynamite [Marvel Fanfare 36]:

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/98...fanfare3628.jpg
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/...fanfare3629.jpg

Regenerates after a plane crash [Marvel Team-Up v1 68]:

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/93...teamup06807.jpg

From being destroyed by a fan blade [Micronauts v1 7]:

http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/...sspecialedi.jpg
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/87...sspecialedi.jpg

From being placed in plastic bags [Man-Thing v3 6]:

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/...nthingv3609.jpg

Regenerates “moments” after reentering the Earth's atmosphere [Man-Thing v1 14]:

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/...anthing1411.jpg

His regeneration is strong enough that Man-Thing is able to survive in a rain that eats organic matter [Marvel Zombies 4 3]:

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9582/page013.jpg
http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/8061/page014.jpg

And while some of these feats required Man-Thing to be in a swamp, after being chemically changed in a sewage treatment plant, Man-Thing is a self-contained ecosystem, able of regenerating himself without the swamp. Theoretically, all these past feats of oozing and regeneration should be possible without the need of any extremal water or plant sources:

Man-Thing thrown in the sewage system [Man-Thing v1 17]:

http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/...nthing01720.jpg

Man-Thing is chemically changed [Man-Thing v1 18]:

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4416/manthing1806.jpg
http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/49/manthing1807.jpg

Man-Thing is a self contained ecosystem [Man-Thing v1 19]:

http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/...anthing1910.jpg

Brambles

Man-Thing's body has sharp plants in it that can injure his opponents [Spider-Man: Fear Itself]:

http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/...piderman011.jpg

Fights

So, as you can probably imagine, these powers make Man-Thing a decent brawler, as we see here against:

A circus strongman [Man-Thing v1 5]:

Here, he takes on Thog, a powerful demon, in his own dimension [Man-Thing v1 22]:

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/...thing221718.jpg
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/...anthing2220.jpg

D'Spayre and other demons talk about this, as it is a very high showing for Man-Thing, indicating that, in the role as Guardian of the Nexus of all Realities, he is able to become as strong as he needs to be [Doctor Strange v2 32]:

http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/...trange03220.jpg

Further, when he fights, he is often not as focused as he could be, as he reacts to emotions rather than out of motivation to “win”. As we see here in his fight with Spider-Man, he is more concerned with the people around him than with fighting [Marvel Team-Up 122]:

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/3734/mtu12215.jpg
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1694/mtu12216.jpg
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/9110/mtu12217.jpg

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/2734/mtu12222.jpg
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3460/mtu12223.jpg

When he is given the normal mind of a man, here is how he fights [Man-Thing v2 4]:

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/...nthing00413.jpg
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/1975/manthing00414.jpg
http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/...nthing00415.jpg
http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/...nthing00416.jpg
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/...nthing00417.jpg

Mordo explains that all he has done is restored Sallis' consciousness to Man-Thing [Doctor Strange v1 41]:

http://img860.imageshack.us/i/drstrange04110.jpg/

In terms of interpretation, it might be good to see the first as a case of Man-Thing with CIS on, whereas the latter would be CIS off.

Empathic Nature

Man-Thing is an empathic character, and can read people's emotions, in fact, they guide him. Here, he is drawn to a man because his pain calls out like a beacon [Incredible Hulk 427]:

http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/...ehulk427p09.jpg

He is able to read the emotions of both humans and animals [Giant Sized Man-Thing 4]:

http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/8717/manthing03.jpg

And can sense darkness in people, even if it is hidden and burried deep [Marvel Team-Up v1 122]:

http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/3513/mtu12204.jpg

His empathic nature is so strong that he can become trapped in other minds. Here, the Sallis part of Man-Thing's mind becomes trapped within the mind of a dying writer, and begins living as a character in his novel. As the writer dies, he loses the empathic connection [Marvel Comics Presents v1 167]:

http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/6042/mcp16710.jpg
http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/9839/mcp16711.jpg

He is able to interact with figments of other people's imagination [Man-Thing v1 12]:

http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/...anthing1206.jpg

Man-Thing can read empathic impressions left at physical locations [Web of Spider-Man v2 6]:

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/...iderman0004.jpg

Because negative emotions do harm to the Man-Thing, it is possible that he can be damaged by strong emotional responses. However, he has a very high tolerance for emotions, here only being put down after an emotional spirit drains all of its energy into him, and recovers shortly after [Man-Thing v1 10]:

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/...nthing01015.jpg
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/...nthing01016.jpg
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/...nthing01020.jpg

Here Man-Thing is injected with raw emotion by a crazy scientist, and walks away after throwing the scientist out a window. Specifically, one of the emotions he is injected with is anger, which is one of the most harmful to the Man-Thing [Marvel Knights Double Shot 2]:

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/...bleshot0218.jpg
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/...bleshot0219.jpg
http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/...bleshot0220.jpg
http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/...bleshot0221.jpg
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/46...bleshot0222.jpg

The empathic connection might be two-way, however, as Man-Thing seems to induce fear into Gladiator here [Daredevil 114]:

http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/...edevil11402.jpg

Here it seems, again, that staring into Man-Thing's eyes produces fearful memories in his victim [Man-Thing v3 1]:

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/...nthingv3113.jpg

And again here [Man-Thing v3 1]:

http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/4913/manthingv3119.jpg

The Man-Thing's Touch

When the Man-Thing touches someone who feels fear, he burns them.

This burn is extremely powerful, able to OHKO normal humans [Punisher v4 11]:

http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/...nisher11011.jpg
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/2388/punisher11012.jpg

or super-humans, like the Lizard [Web of Spider-Man v2 6]:

http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/...iderman0015.jpg

Or it can quickly reduce its target to ashes:

[Hulk 7]:

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/9160/36680437.jpg

The victim here is Glob, a very durable villain, and he is incinerated entirely by Man-Thing's touch [Incredible Hulk 389]:

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3027...lehulk38921.jpg

The burning can create huge flames:

[Marvel Fanfare 36]:

http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/...fanfare3625.jpg

[Marvel Comics Presents v2 12]:

http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/...presents012.jpg

[Master of Kung-Fu 19]:

http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/...ngfu0192122.jpg

[Marvel Zombies 4 4]:

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/5759/page019.jpg
http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/1937/page020.jpg

And can spread from the point of contact through the whole body:

Man-Thing grabs this man by the arm, his whole body burns [Man-Thing v1 7]:

http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/...nthing00711.jpg

Here Man-Thing grabs his victim by the leg, and the whole body burns [Punisher v4 13]:

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/...isher013030.jpg

If Man-Thing is made to feel fear, he will consume himself with flame, but even then he is resilient, as seen here against D'Spayre [Uncanny X-Men 144]:

http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/...ncanny14419.jpg
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/285/uncanny14420.jpg
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/...ncanny14421.jpg
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/...ncanny14422.jpg

Man-Thing's touch can also be used to plant seed [Man-Thing v4 3]:

http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/2406/manthing321.jpg
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4328/manthing322.jpg

Purge demons [Adventure into Fear 13]:

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/...tofear01315.jpg

Burn away plant and lizard DNA from Spider-Man [Spider-Man: Fear Itself]:

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/...piderman031.jpg
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/...piderman032.jpg

Here his touch transmits knowledge telepathically [X-Force v1 100]:

http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/...0036rougher.jpg

Mystic Powers

Man-Thing is one of the typical go-to guys when writers want to show something major has happened in the Marvel Universe. This indicates that he is one of the most important mystical entities on Earth:

[Avengers v1 118]:

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/...ngers11810b.jpg

[Doctor Strange v2 61]:

http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/...cerersupre6.jpg

[Ghost Rider v3 32]:

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/30...r032page017.jpg

[Iron Man v1 275]:

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/...onman275p24.jpg

He is able to see magic energies that normal humans are unaware of [Adventure into Fear 11]:

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/7360/fear1104.jpg
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/9120/fear1105.jpg

[Marvel Team-Up 68]:

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/...teamup06808.jpg
http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/...teamup06809.jpg

He has a mystical connection to the Nexus of all Realities, and knows when it is in danger [Blaze 2]:

http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/4180/blaze0223.jpg

He also intuitively knows who he needs to protect [Generation X 25]:

http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/...ationx25p20.jpg

As explained here, his mystical connection to the Nexus allows him to travel between dimensions [Thunderbolts 144]:

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/...bolts144018.jpg
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/...bolts144019.jpg

He does so here to assist Xavier in finding the X-Men, who are lost in different dimensions [X-Men First Class v2 8]:

http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/...ssv2008dizz.jpg

This power is exploited by Hank Pym, and allows Man-Thing to teleport their entire team [Thunderbolts 145]:

http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/...bolts135015.jpg

Even into other dimensions [Thunderbolts 150]:

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/...bolts150016.jpg

He is able to activate this power himself [Thunderbolts 154]:

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/...olts1540020.jpg

Memories....

Even though Man-Thing retained nothing of Ted Sallis' mind after transformation, small sparks of memory still do come back to him:

For instance, he remembers the Thing, someone he encountered before as the Man-Thing [Marvel Two-in-One v1 77]:

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/...oinone07710.jpg

He is also able to recover memories related to his immediate needs, such as knowing to get a hurt person to a doctor [Adventure into Fear 16]:

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/...tofear01608.jpg

Here Man-Thing knows he must provide a funeral for this clown, and is able to use a stick to begin making a hole, showing he is intelligent enough to use tools [Man-Thing v1 5]:

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/5595/manthing00506.jpg
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/...nthing00515.jpg

Man-Thing has a connection with scientific concepts and equipment, especially chemistry, due to Sallis' profession as a chemist [Adventure into Fear 16]:

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/...tofear01614.jpg

[Giant Sized Man-Thing 3]:

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/6352/manthing17.jpg

So, while not entirely conscious, the Man-Thing can access memories, especially when he needs to accomplish a task or help someone.

Plant Control

While not a typically used power, Man-Thing has shown the ability to control plants in his immediate vicinity:

Eaten plants from the Man-Thing will burn those who ate them, if they feel fear. Therefore, plants do not have to be in contact with Man-Thing to burn [Legion of Monsters: Man-Thing]:

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/3146/img010xn.jpg
http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/4473/img013q.jpg
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/8484/img014xs.jpg
http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/6052/img015p.jpg

Spores can be implanted in his opponents, that will take over their DNA with that of plants [Spider-Man: Fear Itself]:

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/...piderman020.jpg
http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/...piderman021.jpg

These spores remain alive and will attack others, in this case, someone who had been hired to investigate the Man-Thing [Man-Thing v4 2]:

http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/554/manthing206.jpg
http://img864.imageshack.us/img864/2200/manthing207.jpg

Man-Thing has a connection to the swamp, that allows him to spread his “mind” through the plants there, allowing him to “see” what they “see” [Dead of Night Featuring Man-Thing 4]:

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/...dofnight008.jpg
http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/...dofnight009.jpg

He is able to influence the swamp to grow over equipment. Specifically notice how Man-Thing has shaped the plants into a fist around the tractor [Man-Thing v4 1]:

http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/...04angrybadg.jpg

Man-Thing is able to grab his target with plants and roots [Shadows & Light 2]:

http://img864.imageshack.us/img864/...slight2pg22.jpg
http://img858.imageshack.us/img858/...slight2pg23.jpg

Here he is able to grab Angel out of flight with plants [X-Men First Class v2 8]:

http://img864.imageshack.us/img864/...sv2008dizzu.jpg

Thus, while it is not a common tactic, Man-Thing is able to control plants around him.

Alright guys, that is what I've got. Please contact me if there are broken links or inaccuracies, or just post them here! I'll definately keep the thread updated as more issues come out, especially the Thunderbolts ongoing. I may add a part about his greater cosmic role as Nexus Guardian, but it looks like they might be taking the character in a new direction, so /shrug
