I have been and always will be a ninty fan, hell I'll go to the grave saying that the gamecube got a bad rap last gen. But I'm sorry, I just couldn't do the waggle thing this gen. In retrospect I guess I can somewhat see their position. The gcn was roughly on par with the xbox in terms of power. They had some kick ass games that at the time were exclusives in Resident evil 4, Viewtiful Joe etc. Yet they still got the kiddy label. I remember when capcom released Viewtiful Joe, EGM gave it a 9 and I distinctly remember the reviewer saying something like "this is a great game, I wish that Capcom would've released it on other consoles so that more people could experience it". At the time I was like wtf?! They don't say shyte like that about ps2 or xbox exclusives! Ninty must've been like "we've done what we could, we have the games and the power and they still dis us so phuck em. Let's go casual".

The Wii was so far from the norm that I often think that it was Nintendo truly saying phuck you to the hardcore gaming establishment lulz.

Your Nickelodeon, HBO AMC analogy is spot on. I'm just glad you didn't mention showtime. Well, aside from the first 3 seasons of Dexter lol.

Yeah I loved my Gamecube, first place I played the amazingness that was RE4 and of course Viewtiful Joe - which you also mentioned, was an amazing game. I think the Gamecube had much the same problem as the Wii did though with lack of third party support. Now they had some big guns like Capcom backing them, but I keenly remember Psychonauts not being on the system and many other gems.

Glad you liked my analogy. I went with FX because it was the only station I could think off that offers programs that can compete with HBO and AMC. I loved SoA and Justified, and I think Terriers - even though it only got one season before being canceled - is one of the best seasons of a show of all time. Some terrific character work. I still do enjoy Dexter and I felt the American remake of Shameless was also strong, but I don't think Showtime is as strong as it was a few years ago.

The triple-core processor with embedded DRAM and the custom HD GPU capable of 1080p might, though. At the very least it'll be on par, but it is newer and could indeed be a step up visually.

Word is that it's roughly 50% more powerful then both. At least in terms of processing power. That's been a fairly consistent take amongst developers and industry analysts. Some developers have stated that its just flat out more powerful. From what I can gather, that refers to the CPU. The gpu is what'll determine how much better visually its going to look relative to the ps360.

The problem for ninty is whether or not developers are willing to commit the assets required to take full advantage of that extra horsepower. Or will the U just get quick dirty ports.

A number of commentators I have seen were confused on whether this was actually a console or not (as opposed to just a fancy controller). It's surprising how people can just miss out some of the basics sometimes... like remembering to say it was a new console.

That line about the console being invisible is lovely gibberish. You will interact with it the exact same amount as any other console- i.e to put discs in it.

According to the Blistered Thumbs guys, none of the footage of the 3rd party games we saw at E3 was actually from the Wii U. It was all from the 360 or PS3 versions. ~~So ironically they're both right and wrong.~~ Nah, they're just wrong. But maybe thats where they're getting that impression from. However, tech demo's have proven the Wii U is graphically 'hardcore'.

My god. The hype over this new controller is just revolting. This is the Wii Remote all over again, IMO.

Unless Nintendo hitches up their nuts and drops a console with some actual power and third party support, then I'm probably going to lose interest.
