What is a "hardcore gamer"? I'm only asking in here because lots of people are throwing the term around.
I was under the impression that the actual definition was based upon the amount of time someone spent playing a game, not on having a predilection on graphics or MP games or what not, otherwise I imagine a "hardcore gamer" who only has a console would be an oxymoron, as PC's will be superior to a console in MP support and graphics.

Shut your mouth, hardcore gamer. You have no soul.

There are various definitions but the one I like the best:
A person who plays "hardcore" titles such as CoD, Elder of the Scrolls, Halo. Time spent on the games is not important as it's more of an attitude towards gaming rather than actual time spent playing the games.
For instance, you could be a hardcore gamer if you spend only 2 hours a week playing video games.
It's more the games and your attitude towards the games you play.
What do Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, and Halo all have in common?

And Microsoft and Sony don't have gimmicks I'm guessing? *looks at Kinect and all that*
Gaming itself has pretty much always been a gimmick when you think about it.. Whether or not the gimmick being used actually works or is successful is what counts in the end, though.
Comparing what the Wii did to Kinect and Move isn't really fair, imo.

Easy answer: they are played almost exclusively by hardcore gamers.
Which came first: hardcore games or hardcore gamers?
Answer: neither.
They evolved with each other. Technically, the games were produced because they were in demand. But that was more a product of certain types of games succeeding to the publishers' surprise such as Doom 3D and Wolfenstein 3D.
Casual is self explantory. Core are the gamers who have a 360/PS3 but not both and play CoD, Madden, GTA and very popular games. Hardcore are gamers with multiple consoles, play the more obscure stuff.
