you keep saying that finti, but then you'll never find out if a movies good or not if you never see it. so there might come a good movie from one of those countries, which would suit you, but which you'd never see cause of the language. thereby missing out on a good experience. it's not like all films from one country are similar.
I finally saw this movie and damn it was sickening the way they bashed the guys head with the fire extinguisher, the whole atmosphere of the guy bar was sickening, some of the scene were more sickening than others and at firrst u dont condone what they do but after seeing the whole rape scene and after that when it gets in depth into character of the rape victim and the guys the killed the attacker u cant help but be in the side of the guys killing the attacker, one question though to those who saw it, Did they killed the right guy? i couldnt distinguish one from the other! and i agree its not for the faint at heart!

Sounds alot like "I Spit on your Grave" another movie with no score, making it eerily realistic. Don't know about "Irreversible" as I've not yet seen it but the reviews for I Spit were way blown out of proportion in my opinion. The rape scene in I Spit was over 20 minutes long encompassing 3 separate rapes/beatings and as horrific as rape is, the scenes really weren't that graphic and the storyline was really bland and simplistic. I didn't think it was that great but I bought it because I think Camille Keaton is (was) gorgeous :-)
But why make this kind of film? Why watch it? My friend used to work in a cineman where they were showing it. She said that as soon as she had warned the customers about the rape scene, the women didn't want to see it - but the men were eager to go. Why, why, why???? That's scary.
I ask the same thing. I also question how they go about consciously adding a rape scene, much less one is gratuitious as this. I think it's somewhat in bad taste, and disrespectful to rape victims worldwide even try and recreate such an act, and for entertainment purposes.
Nobody needs a movie to dictate how devastating and demoralizing rape is. Besides, how are they to know what rape is like, unless they endured it themselves, or they had someone calling the shots that was raped themselves, and felt it was O.K. to market it as entertainment.
IMO, there's no positive excuse to have stuff like this in movies.
Rather then restating the same points that answer your questions about this movie and others like it, I will simply paste a post I wrote a few weeks ago about the movie and why it is indeed necessary to have movies like this in order to truley understand how horrible rape is...
I see your point, and I don't think people really "enjoy" watching the film. In fact, it disgusts and disturbs everyone I know who has seen it. But, the reason people watch it is for the surprisingly large scope of the film.
I think you have misunderstood the film, you seem to think it's a gorefest and nothing more, when there is actually just 2 violent scenes (one brutal murder that lasts about 2 minutes, and the now infamous rape scene that lasts about 11). The rest of the flim is about the people involved, it tells a story about fate, destiny, and shows with unrelentless honesty how horrible and beautiful the world can be at different moments.
It's the same reason people watch movies like Requiem for a Dream, or any other heavy drama in which the characters suffer. It cleanses us it seems, and it makes the viewer think long and hard about life adn the world around us.
I wrote a full review of this film in the movie review section, that describes many aspects of this great film, I suggest you read it to fully understand the point and meaning of the film. Or just watch it for yourself.
I'd also like to add that almost any good or memorable scene in a horror movie will be in "bad taste" to someoen or another, that argument is null and void in a horror film.
If Irreversible exploited rape in some way or another, rather then showing it in a blunt, honest and sad manner, then I would agree with you that it serves no purpose, but the fact of the matter is, that is not the case. It is the only film I've seen that shows rape as a blunt tragedy and nothing more.
Most movies attempt to excite the rape scene and dull it down a bit so the viewer won't feel offended and sickened by the scene like they would if they were to see rape as it truley is, which this movie forces us to do.
People don't watch this movie for entertainment any more then they do a film like Kids or Leaving Las Vegas. They show us and allow us to truly comprehend the horrible events in the film in a way that would be impossible without them. Movies like this should be applauded for their educational value alone, not to mention their bravery and originality that makes them impossible to forget.
