But complete replacement with a CG model might...still I agree it would better if Hamill could lose a few stone and do it the old fashioned way. He has just under a year to do it, as roughrider pointed out.

You have very low standards. Better than 90% of movies? Wow. I'm glad you don't make movies.
If Han's in the next trilogy I want to see him die, you know, do that whole legit "hero" thing that he was supposed to do in ROTJ if Lucas had set out to make a good movie not more action figures. If Star Wars movies are missing one thing it's real heroic sacrifice... and also a decent female Jedi.
Oh and something I just thought about: If Han is back then you can almost guarantee that Chewie will be back too in some fashion. I don't know.... if everyone comes back it will be very tough for the writer's to avoid making it feel like a rehash of the OT....

Does anyone else feel very sad that John Williams is probably not going to live through another two trilogies, and there's a chance he may not even make it through the entirety of the next one. I understand that people were content or even enjoyed the transition that the Harry Potter films made when Willliams was finished with that franshise and passed the themes on, but as a die hard Williams fan I'm sure that most people can understand that I was only content and tolerant of the proceeding HP film scores. The resulting music lacked MAGIC, which is sad for a movie about magic. Tolerance and contentment is something that I am getting very tired of having to deal with when it comes to my beloved Star Wars and I honestly can't think of a current film composer that Hollywood would actually pick to take the reigns that can get the magic of Star Wars music right, and I will f*cking god smack anyone that even utters the words "Hans" or "Zimmer" in response to this.
Giacchinno might come close, but he's gotta hire the best orchestrator in the world and maybe hire a ghost theme writer or something because his themes are somewhat lacking especially when he's doing all of the orchestration himself (Star Trek 09 theme? Melodramatic garbage.) If it were me who had to pick I would go with James Horner. The guy has serious melodic skills, orchestrates/conducts everything himself, and has a real knack for old fashioned, loud, in your face, brass-heavy motifs. I give you: STAR TREK: WRATH OF KHAN (my favorite part starts at :50)
Other than Horner and MAYBE Giacchinno I can't think of a big name composer who could give the kind of power that we as fans require out of an artist for a Star Wars picture. Shit, Williams is part of the reason I still rewatch the prequels.
Is there some sort of sacrificial ritual we can all perform to make sure good ole' Johnny Williams doesn't bite the dust? Anyone got a book of the dead lying around?
Danny Elfman is a pretty good composer IMO, could do a SW style score I think. However, Tupac released albums post death, so John Williams is probably writing about 100 tunes which he'll hand to Disney, "In case of death".

I'm going to get so much hate for this:
Howard Shore writes boring themes and couldn't orchestrate his way out of a paper bag without some help from fellow composers, the dude doesn't even like conducting his own scores (because he sucks at it). He, along with Zimmer, are seriously the most overrated composers in Hollywood, and I know I'm in the minority in thinking this way but it's only because I've been forced to study his music for years and have had the disadvantage of meeting that old pompous f*ck on a few occasions, I even have a reprinted copy of his original LOTR conductor's score that I studied in college.
I know I'm committing sacrilege with this one because of all the LOTR die hards but Howard has built up his style over the years to be dry, melodramatic, and always directly "to the point" which worked really well for LOTR (where he was pushed to the end of his abilities by Peter Jackson) but his style will NOT translate into epic space opera music where excitement, energy and wonderment are required. Who they eventually choose to compose for these movies is a bigger deal to me personally than casting, direction, etc and if they pick a mediocre, vastly overrated hack Like Howard Shore I will be the saddest Star Wars fan you will ever meet.
His works are distinctly unmemorable. I've seen a lot of the films he's composed for, and I can't bring up a single note from memory--LotR excepted.
Even if Williams is dead or declines, I hope they don't try and recreate his music. I would like the sequels to be a departure in style across the board, not just the music. Leave the Hero's Quest with the OT, the lifeless husk with the PT, and go for something different with the ST. That includes the music. At least that way, if Williams isn't involved, it won't feel like he's the one component that's missing.

You keep the important theme music, and add whatever else is necessary.
It's hard to name someone who could be considered in the John Williams mold. His great contemporary Jerry Goldsmith has already passed on. Who else could do the music right?
James Newton Howard
Hans Zimmer
Henry Jackman
Marc Streitenfeld
I think the best choice would be John Powell. Listen to How To Train Your Dragon and tell me it's not John Williams-like.
And I don't think Howard Shore or James Horner have the right style for Star Wars.
